Purification Performance
To test the AirDoctor 3000, we set up the air purifier in a medium sized room in our office. I took a baseline measurement before starting the test to measure the current air quality. Then, I let the AirDoctor 3000 run on the highest setting for 1 hour and measured the air quality to get another set of measurements.
Starting Baseline
- PM2.5: 2.1
- PM10: 3.5
- Particles: 493
- AQI: 8
After 1 Hour
- PM2.5: 0.1
- PM10: 0.2
- Particles: 15
- AQI: 1
Within the 1 hour test, the AirDoctor 3000 removed 95.2% of air particulates from the medium-sized room we tested in (~14’x10’).
The AirDoctor 3000 improved PM2.5 air quality by 97.0%
In order to get these measurements, we used the Temtop LKC-1000S+ professional air quality detector. This device allows us to get precise readings and performance metrics before and after the test.
Below, we’ve included information on the testing criteria and what defines good vs. bad air quality.
The Filters
To achieve this filtration performance, the AD3000 uses 4 different filters in tandem.
These include:
- Pre-filter
- Activated carbon filter
- HEPA filter
- Negative ion generator
AirDoctor uses similar filters in all of their air purifiers. The pre-filter catches larger particles like hair floating around in the air.
Next, the carbon filter absorbs VOC’s and other odors removing them from the air.
The main filter, the HEPA filter, catches the majority of the airborne particulates as small as 0.003 microns.
Finally, the negative ion generator will attach negative ions to particulate matter in the air. Once attached, it will cause them to stick to a surface to be wiped up later.
Noise Test
Our noise test measures the level of noise generated by the AirDoctor 3000 while it is running. We run it on each power mode, stand about 3’ away, and measure the amount of noise generated with a sound meter app.
Our results showed the following decibel levels from each mode.
Low
41.3 dB
Medium
44.2 dB
High
43.4 dB
Max
53.1 dB
Overall, the noise level of the AD3000 fell between 41 – 54 dB. It isn’t the quietest air purifier we’ve tested, which could be an issue for those who like it quiet during the night.
Still, at its quietest, the noise level is similar to a babbling brook and can be a soothing white noise for some.
Common noise levels:
- 20 dB – rustling leaves
- 30 dB – whisper
- 40 dB – quiet library, babbling brook
- 50 dB – refrigerator, moderate rainfall
- 60 dB – normal conversation, dishwashers
- 70 dB – traffic, showers
- 80 dB – alarm clock, telephone dial tone
Usability Tests
Usability for the AirDoctor 3000 was good overall. It was incredibly easy to set up, use, and maintain.
It lacks app connectivity or remote control features, but what it lacks in features it makes up for in ease and performance.
Setup
Setup is incredibly simple for the AD3000 as it effectively comes set up out of the box. All you need to do is remove the packaging from around the filter inside and plug the device in.
From there the air purifier is ready to run and clean the air.
Controls
As mentioned previously, there is no app connectivity or remote control with the AirDoctor 3000. Instead, there are only physical touch buttons to control the device.
These buttons allow you to:
- Control the fan speed
- Turn on/off auto mode
- Dim the lights
- Set a predetermined timer
- Turn on/off negative ion generator
While these buttons are simple, they are touch sensitive and easy to use.
Maintenance
Maintenance, like all other usability subcategories, is straightforward and easy. You will need to replace the filters as they wear out and wipe down sensors over time.
HEPA filters should be replaced every 6-12 months depending on usage and environment. Whereas carbon filters should be replaced every 12 months.
