Roomba 980

Roomba 980 review

Pros
Excellent cleaning performance, advanced navigation, wifi connectivity, and a long run time.

Cons
One of the most expensive robot vacuums on the market and is on the louder side compared to other robot vacuums.

Bottom Line
If you’ve got the budget, this robot vacuum provides excellent cleaning performance and a truly “hands-off approach.” Set it and forget it—this robot will get the job done.

Shark Navigator

Shark Navigator Lift-Away Pro upright vacuum cleaner review

Pros
Good all-around performance, lots of accessories, large dust bin.

Cons
On the heavier side at 13.7 pounds, longer assembly for first-time use, and average maneuverability.

Bottom Line
The Shark Navigator Pro is a solid all-around upright vacuum. It has great cleaning performance overall, low maintenance costs, and great value.

Miele Compact C1

Pros
Has a 29.5′ cleaning radius and multiple cleaning modes to choose from.

Cons
Has a bagged canister, its settings are not super intuitive or easy to understand, and it’s heavy to carry up or down stairs.

Bottom Line
This canister vacuum has great performance and at a reasonable price. If you’re considering a canister style vacuum, this is certainly one you won’t want to miss.

Ergorapido

Electrolux Ergorapido Review

Pros
Ultra lightweight at 5.5 pounds, highly maneuverable, cordless, and inexpensive.

Cons
Struggles to pick up larger debris (e.g. cereal). However, you can use the detachable handheld for larger debris.

Bottom Line
This stick vacuum is an excellent value (around $130), lightweight (5.5 pounds), and cordless (~21-minute run time). It’s just a solid pickup from top to bottom.

In the past, cleaning hardwoods meant getting out the bristle broom and dust pan and slowly working your way around your home. It was tedious, it was relentless, and it was messy. Today, modern vacuum cleaners are designed to be able to tackle any mess in your home, whether that be on carpet, tile, laminate, or hardwood floors. Say goodbye to the broom!

The best vacuum for hardwood floors can vary by type. There are many powerful robots, uprights, canisters, stick, or even handheld vacuums that can handle messes on hardwood floors. When shopping around for the best vacuum, consider the needs of your space first.

RELATED – Not sure what kind of vacuum is right for you? Check out our complete vacuum guide to help you decide.

To determine the best vacuum choices, we put all of the vacuums we review through a series of cleaning performance tests. We test each model on a hardwood floor, assessing its cleaning performance and usability. We test four different debris types including: rice, kitty litter, cereal, and sugar.

Cleaning test debris types

Testing Debris – From left to right: Rice (3 oz.), Kitty Litter (3 oz), Cereal (1 oz), Sugar (3 oz)

To identify the best vacuums for cleaning hardwood floors, we’re looking for perfect performance (or close to it). The first three models below scored a perfect 100% in all debris tests on hardwood floors. This is exceptionally good performance, showing that it can clean the range of debris that life is bound to bring in.

Following the top three performers, we have also included several other great choices. Most of the following scored nearly as well, but struggled on one particular test (usually our large debris cereal test). Nevertheless, these hardwood floor vacuums still performed great on hardwood floors and are worth consideration.

There’s a lot of great models to review, so let’s get started.

Roomba 980 Robot Vacuum

The Roomba 980 robot vacuum is the top-of-the-line robot vacuum that iRobot currently offers. Cleaning performance for this model is exceptional on hardwoods and has a run time of up to 120 minutes. Possible downsides to this robot vacuum include the higher price tag as well as the fact that it’s a bit loud compared to other robot vacuums.

Roomba 980 robot vacuum

Roomba 980 robot vacuum

Design: The Roomba 980 has a round body style with a central “CLEAN” button, simple controls, and an on-board camera that scans the room as it cleans. This camera helps to limit excessive bumping as it navigates the space. This vacuum is 13.9″ in diameter and 3.6″ high.

On the underside, the Roomba 980 has:

  1. Dual brushrolls – This style of brushroll helps to prevent tangles and clogging as well as streamline maintenance.
  2. Spinning side brush – This brush sweeps corners and edges as Roomba cleans, ensuring that no dust, dirt, or debris gets left behind. As it spins, it deposits the debris directly into the cleaning path of the brushroll.
  3. Charging contact pins – These pins help the Roomba to know when it has successfully made it to the charger. Once it’s charging a light will illuminate on the base and the Roomba makes a tone chime.
  4. Dust bin and HEPA filter – This area is reserved for the dust bin and HEPA filter. To release the bin, there is a simple latch on the top of the vacuum.

Accessories & Parts: The Roomba 980 robot vacuum comes with:

Usability: Concerning usability, the Roomba 980 is extremely easy to operate. You can start, pause, or cancel a cleaning cycle using the touch buttons on the face of the vacuum, with your smartphone via wifi connectivity, or even using voice control if you have Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.

Value: While the cost for the Roomba 980 is definitely at the top tier, the cleaning performance, usability, easy maintenance, and long battery life make this robot vacuum an excellent choice for cleaning hardwoods (or any floor for that matter.)

I would recommend the Roomba 980 robot vacuum to people who:

  • Want Power Boost: If you need a vacuum that cleans well on hardwoods as well as an extra boost for cleaning carpeted floors, the Roomba 980 is an excellent option.
  • Want two virtual barriers: If you have a larger home or a complicated layout, the Roomba virtual barriers are especially handy for blocking off specific areas that you want Roomba to skip over.

Roomba 960 Robot Vacuum

The Roomba 960 robot vacuum robot vacuum is one step below the Roomba 980 in the series, but still had a perfect score when it comes to cleaning hardwood floors. The main difference between the Roomba 960 and the Roomba 980 is that the 980 model has a Power Boost mode for cleaning carpets as well as an additional virtual wall included.

Roomba 960 robot vacuum

Roomba 960 robot vacuum

Design: The design of the Roomba 960 is also quite similar to the 980 model. It has the central “CLEAN” button with additional settings, an on-board camera, a handle, and a dust bin release. A bumper on the front also provides some shock resistance, which protects your walls and furniture as well as the vacuum.

On the underside, the Roomba 960 has:

  1. Spinning side brushes – These brushes spin when the Roomba is running and help clean edges, corners, and other hard-to-reach places. It spins clockwise so that dirt and dust is deposited in front of the brushrolls, allowing the vacuum to suck it up.
  2. Charging contact pins – These pins communicate with sensors on the charging station and help the Roomba to know when it is on the charger. When these pins come in contact with the charger, Roomba makes a chiming noise to let you know that it’s juicing up.
  3. Dual brushrolls – These dual rubber brushrolls work in tandem to agitate and vacuum up any debris on the floor. They rotate opposite directions as they clean, which forces debris into the dust bin, without getting tangled (usually).
  4. Dust bin and HEPA filter – This bin houses the dust and debris as well as a separate compartment for the HEPA filter. Each time you empty the dust bin, it’s good general practice to remove the filter and clean it, and keep everything running smoothly.

Accessories & Parts: The Roomba 960 robot vacuum comes with:

  • Filter
  • One virtual walls
  • Charging station

The accessories that the Roomba 960 comes with are pretty typical of a Roomba. Contrary to the Roomba 980, the 960 only comes with one virtual wall; however depending on the size and layout of your home, one could easily be sufficient.

Usability: The usability of the Roomba 960 is also comparable to that of the Roomba 980. The design is extremely intuitive and easy to understand. Wifi connectivity allows you to control the vacuum with your smartphone, tablet, or even voice control (via Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant).

I would recommend the Roomba 960 robot vacuum to people who:

  • Have a higher budget: Compared to other vacuums, the Roomba 960 is definitely one of the more expensive models, but that also comes with a variety of bells and whistles as well as exceptional cleaning performance.
  • Want advanced navigation: The navigation of the Roomba 960 is also extremely advanced. As it runs, the 960 creates a digital map of the space, allowing it to make sure no spots are missed as well as providing a summary of each cleaning cycle for your review.

Miele Compact C1 Canister Vacuum

The Miele Compact C1 canister vacuum is another top performer for a great vacuum for hardwood floors. Besides excellent cleaning performance on wood floors (or laminate, tile, etc.), this canister vacuum also has excellent cleaning performance on carpets.

As possible downsides, this canister vacuum is a bagged vacuum so things could get a little messy and it’s a little tricky to understand exactly what settings are available on the central control knob.

Miele C1 Compact - best canister vacuum

Miele C1 Compact canister vacuum

Design: Contrary to a robot vacuum that essentially runs itself, this vacuum is directed by the user. It comes on a wheeled base and with a long extension hose that allows you to maneuver and clean a variety of environments.

It comes with an 18′ power cord and an automatic cord wrap button to make for an easy cleanup when the job is done. This canister vacuum is 18.2″ x 8.7″ x 11″ and weighs 16.1 pounds.

Parts and accessories included with the Miele Compact C1

1) Miele C1 base, 2) wand, 3) hose, 4) cleaning heads, and 5) extra cleaning tools

Accessories & Parts: The Miele C1 Compact canister vacuum comes with:

  • Vacuum base
  • Wand
  • Hose
  • Cleaning heads
  • Extra cleaning tools

The Miele C1 Compact comes with a wide range of accessories. Depending on the exact type of spaces you’re working with, it is likely that the C1 will be able to tackle it.

CLEANING: Click here to check out the cleaning performance of the Miele C1 Compact.

Miele C1 canister vacuum hardwood cleaning test

Usability: Overall, the usability of this vacuum is just okay. Setting it up is a breeze since you just need to select the cleaning tool you’d like to use and they easily snap into the respective parts. Next, you just plug it in and you’re good to go.

The one tricky part comes when you’re trying to select the correct cleaning style prior to turning on the vacuum. There are small white graphics that do indicate specific settings, but these settings rely solely on graphic representation and there is no text. Overall, I think these icons are a little hard to understand without reading about them beforehand.

I would recommend the Miele C1 Compact to people who:

  • Want utterly exceptional cleaning performance – To date, the Miele C1 Compact is simply the best vacuum by performance we’ve tested. It scored 100% on all floor types and all debris types, going 12 for 12 on our cleaning tests. The design, motor, and build quality of this unit is truly exceptional.
  • Want a bagged vacuum cleaner – The Miele C1 Compact is one of the few vacuums we’ve tested and like that use a bag. If you suffer from severe allergies, the bag may be cleaner in some cases since you can throw the whole bag away and replace, versus having to clean it.

Electrolux Ergorapido Stick Vacuum

The Electrolux Ergorapido Lithium Ion Plus is a 2-in-1 stick vacuum that works as a powerful stick vacuum as well as a portable handheld. This vacuum is lightweight and cordless, and it scored over 95% on all hardwood cleaning tests except for cereal.

That being said, if you don’t commonly have large debris, you may not even notice the shortcoming. For smaller debris, and for people who want the convenience of a cordless upright, the Electrolux ErgoRapido is a great option.

As it stands right now, the Electrolux Ergorapido is the best cordless vacuum for hardwood floors we’ve tested to date.

electrolux ergorapido ion 2-in-1

The Electrolux ErgoRapido Ion is a 2-in-1 and operates as an upright vacuum or handheld vacuum.

Design: The design of the Ergorapido is sleek and modern, with a removable handheld at the base of the unit. There is a bristle-style brushroll that comes in contact with the floor and rotates to agitate and suck up debris.

There is a simple power button at the top of the vacuum and a handheld release button lower on the vacuum, right above the handheld. This stick vacuum is approximately 5″ x 10.8″ x 42.5″ tall.

Accessories & Parts: The Electrolux Ergorapido comes with:

  • HEPA Filter
  • Charging cable
  • Crevice tool
  • Dusting brush

Concerning accessories, the Ergorapido doesn’t come with anything too unique, like a pet hair attachment, but the crevice tool and dusting brush are nice additions for simple jobs.

Electrolux Ergorapido Ion Hardwood floor cleaning tests

Electrolux Ergorapido stick vacuum – hardwood cleaning tests

Usability: This lightweight stick vacuum is extremely easy to use, and arguably one of the best cordless vacuums for hardwood floors available. There are limited buttons and simple features that were easy to understand, even when using it for the first time.

This vacuum comes assembled; all you have to do is charge it for at least 4 hours before using and you’re good to go.

I would recommend the Electrolux Ergorapido stick vacuum to people who:

  • Want a cordless stick – If you’re looking for something portable, but still want a stick, the Ergorapido is an excellent option. It’s compact, but powerful enough to handle most messes on your hardwood floors.
  • Want a 2-in-1 – This stick vacuum is a 2-in-1 and has a detachable handheld vacuum at the base of the vacuum. Whether you’re cleaning entire floors or smaller spaces, this vacuum would likely be able to meet your cleaning needs.

Shark Navigator Pro Upright Vacuum

The Shark Navigator Pro upright vacuum is one of the largest vacuums in this comparison, but with its size also comes a variety of bells and whistles as well as excellent hardwood cleaning performance. This vacuum is a 2-in-1 so it can function as a traditional upright or as a handheld vacuum.

This vacuum offers a couple different cleaning configurations which is nice for versatility; however it is a bit heavy to maneuver around and the turning radius is not really that great.

Shark Navigator Pro upright vacuum

Shark Navigator Pro upright vacuum

Design: The Shark Navigator Pro has a hefty design, but included adaptations to be able to configure a variety of cleaning situations. It has mainly a white body with gray and red accents to call out special features.

When you’re ready to use the Shark as a handheld, there is one button that will convert the vacuum over, allowing you to walk away with just the handheld portion and continue cleaning.

As an upright, this vacuum weighs 13.7 pounds. When used as the detachable handheld vacuum, the in-hand weight is closer to 8 pounds. It is 12″ x 15″ x 45.5″ tall.

1) handheld wand and accessories, 2) canister, 3) upright roller base, 4) extension wand, 5) dust-genie

1) handheld wand and accessories, 2) canister, 3) upright roller base, 4) extension wand, 5) dust-genie

Accessories & Parts: The Shark Navigator Pro upright vacuum comes with:

  • Handheld wand and accessories – includes 8” Crevice tool, dusting brush, and pet power brush
  • Canister
  • Upright cleaning head
  • Extension wand
  • Dust-Away hard floor attachment with two microfiber pads
  • HEPA Filter Set (not shown)

Again, due to the size and bulk of this vacuum, it has more on-board accessories than most other vacuums in this review. The attachments can be used with the hose attachment on the upright portion or directly on the handheld portion.

The “Dust Away Genie” is especially handy for cleaning hardwood floors. It’s basically a microfiber pad that attaches to the cleaning head, very similar to how the Swiffer dry mop work.

CLEANING: Click here to check out the cleaning performance of the Shark Navigator Pro.

shark navigator pro hardwood test

Shark Navigator Pro upright vacuum – hardwood cleaning tests

Usability: The Shark Navigator Pro is relatively easy to use, but setup may be a bit overwhelming, compared to simpler models. There are quite a few attachments and parts depending on what cleaning configuration you’re using.

Once the vacuum is properly assembled, the user buttons are pretty clear on what buttons perform which function. When using this vacuum, it definitely feels bulkier than other vacuums for hardwood floors. But with the bulk comes a variety of features that slimmer models may not have, like more suction or on-board attachments.

RELATED – Like the sound of Shark? See more Modern Castle Shark vacuum reviews here.

When using as a handheld, the Shark Navigator Pro is lighter than as an upright. It’s feasible to carry this handheld for a short time, but at 8 pounds, it would likely be a little heavy for extended handheld cleaning cycles.

Shark Navigator Pro vacuuming stairs in canister mode

Shark Navigator Pro – 2 in 1 vacuum, can be used in canister mode or upright

I would recommend the Shark Navigator Pro upright vacuum to people who:

  • Want a full-size upright – The Shark Navigator Pro is a full-size upright and with that comes powerful suction, a larger dust bin capacity, and a wider cleaning head.
  • Want a large variety of attachments – This vacuum comes with three handheld or hose attachments, two wands / hoses, two full size cleaning heads and one canister.

Bissell Hard Floor Expert Canister Vacuum

The Bissell Hard Floor Expert canister vacuum offers excellent cleaning for hardwood floors and great maneuverability. It comes with two different cleaning heads and is relatively lightweight, considering its size.

Unfortunately, this vacuum only has one suction mode so it can’t react to changing floor types, but it’s the “Hard Floor Expert” for a reason since it is designed to mainly tackle messes on hard floors.

Bissell Hard Floor Expert best canister vacuum

Bissell Hard Floor Expert canister vacuum body

Design: The design of the Bissell Hard Floor vacuum is pretty sleek for a canister vacuum. It has two large wheels that are designed into the base of the vacuum and a large-capacity dust bin on the front. The open nozzle at the front attaches to the suction hose, which then connects to one of the two cleaning heads.

There is a hard floor cleaning head as well as a multi-purpose cleaning head. One general note: the cleaning performance with the hard floor cleaning head was about 73%. With the multi-purpose cleaning head, this percentage was over 95%, since it was able to capture more of the large cereal debris, compared to the hard floor head.

Accessories & Parts: The Bissell Hard Floor Expert comes with:

  • Hose / Wand
  • Hard floor cleaning head & multi-purpose cleaning head
  • Dusting brush and crevice tool
  • Handle

This hard floor canister vacuum comes with a nice selection of accessories for variable cleaning styles. The dual cleaning heads was an especially nice feature.

Hardwood floor cleaning tests - Bissell hard floor expert

Bissell Hard Floor Expert canister vacuum – hardwood cleaning tests

Usability: The initial setup of this Bissell hardwood floor vacuum was actually a bit more complicated than I expected. It wasn’t entirely clear which hoses attached to which area. That being said, once I knew where the plug ins were, it was easy to do.

As for the actual usability of the Bissell Hard Floor Expert, it was much simpler than the setup. There is only one suction mode so all you need to do is select your attachment, plug it in, and get to cleaning.

Close up shot of the hard floor rolling brush head on the Bissell hard floor expert vacuum

Bissell Hard Floor Expert vacuum head

I would recommend the Bissell Hard Floor Expert canister vacuum to people who:

  • Want a lightweight canister – At only 9.3 pounds, this canister vacuum is surprisingly lightweight, without sacrificing cleaning performance.
  • Want cleaning heads for different floor types – Although the Hard Floor Expert doesn’t have different cleaning modes that adjust to variable floor heights, it does have two separate cleaning heads. During our testing, we found that the multi floor tool was better at cleaning large debris from hardwoods than the hard floor tool. However, the hard floor tool was more ideal for actual polishing hardwood floors.

Ecovacs Deebot N79 Robot Vacuum

The Ecovacs Deebot N79 robot vacuum is a budget-friendly robot vacuum that is a bit more “basic” compared to the top-of-the-line Roombas, but can still get the job done. The Deebot N79 is lightweight and hands-free, and it has great suction.

A few small difficulties include finding replacement batteries (when the time comes) as well as suction power when cleaning carpeted floors. Of course, if your home only has hardwoods, this may not be a factor for you.

Ecovacs Deebot N79 robot vacuum

Ecovacs Deebot N79 robot vacuum

Design: The design of the Ecovacs is based on a round body style with simple buttons and a bumper on the front edge to protect your home as well as the vacuum itself. The vacuum itself is 13″ in diameter and 3.1″ high, and weighs 6.7 pounds.

On the underside, the Ecovacs Deebot N79 has:

  1. Wheels – Two large wheels on each side help the Deebot to navigate the space and seamlessly transition between flooring types.
  2. Spinning side brush – Two spinning side brushes rotate on each side to collect dirt, dust, and debris from edges and corners. As these brushes spin, they rotate debris into the suction path of the central brushroll.
  3. Charging contact pins – These pins are what the Deebot N79 uses to connect to the charging base.
  4. Brushroll – The Ecovacs Deebot uses a hybrid style brushroll that blends bristles and a rubberized composite to create the separate rows of the brushroll. This meshed design helps to prevent tangles without the added cost of using dual extractors.
  5. Dust bin and HEPA filter – This area is where the filter is housed as well as the dust bin. To release this bin simply press the release latch on the front of the vacuum.

Since this vacuum is primarily for floors and autonomously cleans, there are limited accessories. But the inclusion of the remote control and cleaning brush are nice extras that didn’t necessarily have to be included.

Usability: As for usability, the Deebot N79 is great and extremely easy to use. There is a simple one button design on the top of the robot vacuum that makes it easy to start, pause, or cancel a cycle.

There is also an app which can pair the vacuum to your smartphone or tablet. From the app you can access additional settings like scheduled cleanings or the “find me” feature, which helps locate your Deebot.

I would recommend the Ecovacs Deebot N79 robot vacuum to people who:

  • Want a smart robot – The Deebot offers wifi connectivity and a remote control for easy usability. There is an “auto” setting that allows the vacuum to automatically clean the space without you having to specify exact settings.
  • Want an affordable vacuum – For a robot vacuum, the Ecovacs Deebot N79 is a pretty affordable choice. It offers a nice number of bells and whistles while still staying cognizant of overall price to the consumer.

iLife A4s Robot Vacuum

The iLife A4s robot vacuum is a great option if you’re looking for a robot vacuum for hardwood floors. The A4s is an affordable robot vacuum with multiple cleaning modes and impressive performance on hardwoods.

Although it lacks bells and whistles like wifi or voice control, for the cost, this robot is a nice contender for cleaning hardwood floors.

iLife A4s robot vacuum cleaner

iLife A4s robot vacuum cleaner

Design: The design of the iLife A4s is relatively simple, and honestly, it’s pretty comparable to the robot models listed above. It uses the central brushroll to capture debris and the side spinning brushes to catch dirt in corners or edges.

On the underside, the iLife A4s has:

  1. Wheels – These two large wheels and one small wheel at the front help the iLife to navigate and transition between different flooring types.
  2. Spinning side brushes – Two brushes on either side of the vacuum spin and collect dirt and debris from the edges and corners of the space. As they rotate, they position the debris to be sucked up by the brushroll in the middle of the unit.
  3. Charging contact pins – These pins communicate with the charging station and help the iLife to get a full charge. Once it’s positioned on the charger with proper engagement from the contact pins, the iLife will make a chiming noise, indicating that it has made contact.
  4. Brushroll – The central brushroll of the iLife is a bristle-style which comes together in a V-shape. This design is intended to increase efficiency and reduce tangles.
  5. Dust bin and HEPA filter – This bin houses the dust bin canister and the HEPA filter. To access the bin, there is a latch on the front of the vacuum that slides the canister out.

Usability: For usability, the iLife was easy. This vacuum comes pre-assembled; all you need to do is snap in the spinning brushes and charge it up—and you’re ready to clean.

The iLife can start a clean by pressing the “Auto” button or by using the remote control. There’s no wifi connectivity, but the remote certainly makes using this vacuum much easier than having to control everything directly from the vacuum itself.

I would recommend the iLife A4s robot vacuum to people who:

  • Want a great deal – Usually priced around $200, the iLife A4s is an excellent value. Especially if you don’t need fancy bells and whistles or want it to primarily sweep up hardwoods, this may be a great option for you.
  • Want a remote control – For such a low price, it is unusual that the iLife would have a remote control. If this feature is important to you, but you’re strapped for cash, the iLife is one of the least expensive robot vacuums with this feature.

Shark Pet Perfect 2 Handheld Vacuum

So while the Shark Pet Perfect 2 cordless handheld vacuum isn’t really ideal for whole-home cleanings, it’s definitely worth the mention due to its amazing performance on hardwood floors. On every debris test for hardwood floor, this handheld collected 100% of debris.

It’s cordless design is very portable and makes it a breeze for tackling quick messes. But with that in mind, the cost for replacement parts is a bit high, when the time comes to replace the battery.

Usability: In terms of usability, the Shark Pet Perfect 2 was impressive. Unlike a traditional upright or even a robot vacuum that is tackling whole floors, the Pet Perfect is designed to clean a small area and work in tandem with your larger primary vacuum.

With that in mind, the Shark has an on / off switch and a dust cup release—and that’s it. Installing or removing attachments from the nozzle is as easy as a slight tug or push and you’re ready to clean. It doesn’t get much simpler than that.
