Dyson HP02

Dyson HP02 Air Purifier

The Dyson HP02 is a popular and high performance air purifier. Its HEPA filter removes 99.97% of allergens, is wifi connected, Alexa compatible, and has both cooling and heating modes.CHECK PRICE

Pros

  • Bladeless. Dyson air purifiers use the same technology as the Dyson fans for bladeless purifiers. This helps to eliminate the build-up of dust and debris around small parts that can be hard to clean.
  • Real Time Air Quality. Dyson Pure air purifiers automatically sense and display real-time air quality, allowing the unit to respond when needed and rest when not needed.
  • Available in Heat or Cool Mode. There are Dyson purifiers that can heat or cool air as well as purify the air, depending on your need or the season.

Cons

  • Expensive. Dyson air purifiers are costly items and might not be worth it unless you really need cleaner air.
  • Bulky for desks. Dyson offers a conservatively sized tower purifier for large rooms, but the desktop sized purifier is larger and bulkier than expected to comfortably fit on a desk, in my opinion.

Dyson Air Purifier Technology

Dyson air purifiers share many similarities with Dyson fan models in terms of technology systems.

Pure Cool

Dyson Pure Cool is a system that is currently utilized in all of the Dyson air purifiers to date. This technology combines UV light and HEPA filtration. With this system, a UV light is used to disinfects 99% of bacteria and contaminants in the air.

HEPA filtration helps to capture even finer particles and contaminants before dispersing back into the air. This system makes Dyson one of the only lineup of fans that distribute air cleaner than when it came in.

Dyson fans - air purifiers

In addition to Pure Cool, Dyson also manufactures one model currently that has Pure Hot technology, the HP02. The Dyson HP02 is a desktop purifier that can be used all year long for heating or cooling needs.

Dyson Link (smartphone control)

Dyson Link technology is what makes your fan accessible from your smartphone.

Using the Link app, Dyson air purifiers are able to sense and report stats about the air quality in the room. When conditions dip below a certain level, the system will automatically turn on and the purifier will begin to treat the air.

For reference, the Dyson Link app allows the following quick functions:

  1. Purifier Activity – Monitors air quality and recommends action with needed.
  2. Filter Life – Studies the quality of the filter and will let you know when it’s time to replace.
  3. Remote Control – Allows you to remotely control the air purifier without touching the actual unit.

Tower vs. Desk Air Purifiers

Dyson has two main sizes of air purifiers available – tower or desk.

Here’s what you need to know about each.

Dyson Tower Air Purifier

The Tower air purifier is about 40″ tall, give or take depending on the exact model, and is designed to move a larger amount of air in a shorter amount of time, compared to Desk air purifiers.

Both of the tower air purifier models (the TP02 and the TP04) have an elongated oval amp which allows air to flow freely through. The amplifier conditions the air as it travels through and is the technology that allows the system to be bladeless.

Does fan size = Room size?

Not necessarily.

According to Dyson, you can use the Desk Purifier or Tower Purifier for any sized room, the difference is just the amount of time that the desk fan will take to condition and treat the room. The smaller fan will obviously take a big longer than the larger Tower Fan will.

Dyson Desk Air Purifier

The Desk air purifier is about half the height of the Dyson Tower Air Purifier. It’s designed to sit on a desk or table top and circulate / purify air throughout a given space.

The Dyson HP02 has an airflow of 423 cubic ft/min, meaning it will take roughly twice as long to condition your air as the Dyson TP02.

Dyson air purifier HPO2

Different appliances, products, and other sources in your home can give off air pollutants

In addition to height, the other main difference is the size of the amplifier. On the Desk purifiers, the amp can either be round, like on the DP04 or oval, like on the HP02.

Although it takes up a bit more space, the round amp moves about twice the amount of air as the oval amp  (887 cubic feet per minute on the DP04 vs. 423 cubic feet per minute on the HP02.

Dyson Air Purifier Design

The design of Dyson air purifiers has a couple common elements between all models. These elements are generally consistent across the board of Dyson models and makes up some of the “token look” that makes a Dyson a Dyson.

Some of these design conditions include:

Bladeless Airflow Movement

All Dyson air purifiers are bladeless.

What’s that mean?

As mentioned above, they have an amp that treats the air as it flows through. The bladeless design is easier to clean and can wiped down with a dry or damp cloth.

Dyson fans - air multiplier technology

Quiet Operation

The bladeless design also allows for quieter operation.

Traditional fans vs. Dyson purifiers:

Traditional fans make noise by constantly “chopping” the air as they rotate. In terms of air purifiers specifically, the rotating fans may be less relevant, as most purifiers do not double as fans, but its feels worth mentioning.

Dual Purpose: Purifier + Fan

Dyson air purifiers all double as fans providing dual purpose within a single unit. This is unusual for most other air purifiers outside of the Dyson lineup.

In addition to operating as a fan and a purifier, they also they also have the added bonus of offering models with heating and cooling.

Dyson dual-mode heaters and fan

There are three models that offer a cooling mode:

There is one model that offers a heating and a cooling mode:

Modern Aesthetics

A Dyson air purifier feels modern, sleek and simple.

There are limited numbers of buttons and no knobs or obstructive add-ons.

At least 50% of each model is designated to the open amplifier which is the main entry point where air enters and is treated before being recycled back into the room.

In addition, Dyson air purifiers come in a range of conservative, yet modern and attractive colors. Exact colors vary by model, but generally includes:

  • silver
  • white,
  • black
  • blue
  • gunmetal gray

Dyson Air Purifier Quality

When talking about quality, the Dyson air purifiers is going to be pretty on-par with other Dyson products, like Dyson fans or Dyson vacuums. They are expensive, but the added cost is generally reflective of the higher quality of a Dyson product.

Dyson air purifiers are made with high quality materials, quality parts, and designed in an intentional and sleek way.

Dyson Air Purifier Usability

Concerning usability, Dyson air purifiers are smart and attune to the air quality of the room that it’s placed in.

Here’s a run down of the process:

  1. Place Dyson air purifier in room and turn on.
  2. Purifier monitors and measures air quality and reports it back to your smartphone using the Link app.
  3. When air quality drops, it can automatically kick on and get to work.

How does a Dyson air purifier work?

  1. The Dyson system pulls air through a fine mesh filter as the first step in the treatment process.
  2. Air is further treated using an additional HEPA filter (exact filter varies by model).
  3. UV light helps in the treatment process and helps to eliminate 99% of bacteria and contaminants in the air.
  4. Once the job is done, the clean air is redirected out the amplifier and distributed throughout the room.

Dyson air purifier - how it works

How to clean a Dyson air purifier?

For the purifier to work at peak performance, its important to keep the unit clean.

Since this purifier is bladeless, it’s a simple process.

To clean the air purifier:

  1. Wipe down the amplifier using a dry or damp cloth.
  2. Vacuum around any vents or crevices (handheld vacuum with a dusting brush, like the Dyson Trigger, is great for this)

Remote control

The remote comes with all current Dyson air purifiers and is a handy tool if you don’t want to connect it to your smartphone for whatever reason. Using the physical remote control, you can oscillate the amplifier and adjust the speed of the fan.

For convenience, there is also a magnetic back to the remote which allows it to magnetize to the top of the amplifier for storage.

Connecting to Your Smartphone

All of the current Dyson air purifiers come with Link technology. This technology is what is used to monitor air quality and recommend action as needed.

MORE: Check out these Dyson fans with Link technology.

Link is accessible using the Dyson app on your smartphone. In order to set up Link, you’ll need to have access to a wifi network.

Want results in real time?

Real-time sensing and response is made possible using the app. In addition to the app, most Dyson air purifiers also have a small round screen at the bottom which shows current air quality.

Dyson air purifier quality

This screen is simple, easy, to read and shows important information about the quality of the air. It will also notify you when it’s time to replace the HEPA filter.

Dyson Air Purifier Value

The cost of a Dyson air purifier varies depending on the exact model you go with, but they are certainly not cheap units.

That being said, you do get a long of bang for your buck.

If the following features are important to you, a Dyson air purifier can be a good value considering all that you get.

Here’s a quick run down of features that add to its overall value:

  • Dual purpose. This unit acts as an air purifier as well as a fan that can be used for heating or cooling (depending on the model)
  • Smartphone control. Dyson air purifiers can be controlled with your smartphone (as long as they are compatible with the Link technology)
  • Remote control. Regardless of whether or not they have Link, all Dyson air purifiers come with a remote control to adjust the speed and oscillation without having to manually press the unit.
  • Bladeless. Bladeless Dyson fans, purifiers, and humidifiers are amazingly easy to clean and also cut down on choppy air noise.
  • UV purification. Dyson air purifiers use UV lights to help block and kill 99% of bacteria and contaminants in the air.

Best Dyson Air Purifiers

So you like the sound of a Dyson air purifier?

There are four main models on the market now, each with different designed uses in mind.

Check them our below and see if one might be right for you.

Dyson Pure Cool Link TP02 Air Purifier

The Dyson Pure Cool Link TP02 Air Purifier is a tower purifier that is designed to tackle purification and air distribution of larger rooms.

Dyson Pure Cool TP04 Air Purifier

The Dyson Pure Cool TP04 Air Purifier is the next generation of the TP02 and shares many of the same features, with a few upgrades to note.

First, the TP04 has an upgraded LCD display for clearer readings, more sensors, 350 degree oscillation and a new backward mode for variable airflow.

What about the filter?

The TP04 also has a more advanced filtration, with 60% more HEPA and 3 times more carbon in the filter. This filter is called the Glass HEPA Media vs. the 360 Glass HEPA like what is found with the TP004  and the HP02 models.

Dyson Pure Cool TP04 tower fan

Like the TP02, it’s about the same size, is wifi-enabled for smartphone control and offers a cooling mode only. It also has a slightly wider amp and is about three pounds heavier (10.98 lbs. vs. 8.4 lbs).

Regarding airflow, the TP04 has a max of 765 cubic feet per minute. Compared to the TP02, this is 12% less airflow, but better filtration so this could be a bit of a wash between the two models.

Best Features:

  • Air Multiplier technology
  • bladeless
  • sleep timer (from 15 minutes up to 9 hours)
  • automatic night time mode
  • comes with remote control

Dyson Pure Hot & Cool Link HP02 Air Purifier

The Dyson Pure Hot & Cool Link HP02 Air Purifier is a desktop fan that has three purposes. It is a desk fan, an air purifier, and a heater.

A few things ondesign …

Although it is more compact, it has the same UV treatment system for killing bacteria and is certified to be Allergy and Asthma friendly.

Dyson HP02 air purifier

Unlike the tower purifiers, the desktop versions (HP02 and DP04) can oscillate or tilt. This allows you to have a bit more control when directing the air.

Air flow specs:

In terms of airflow, the HP02 has a max rate of 423 cubic feet per minute.

While this is less than the rate of the TP02 or TP04 tower fans, it’s still a considerable amount of air. Given enough time, this little guy could still treat a larger space like the tower purifiers, it would just take longer.

Best Features:

  • Air Multiplier technology
  • bladeless
  • sleep timer (from 15 minutes up to 9 hours)
  • automatic night time mode
  • comes with remote control
  • oscillates
  • certified Asthma and Allergy friendly

Dyson Pure Cool Link DP04 Air Purifier

The Dyson Pure Cool Link DP04 air purifier is another desktop air purifier, like the HP02, like with a couple significant differences.

The biggest differences between these two models includes:

  1. Fan Modes: The DP04 only has a mode for cooling, while the HP02 has a mode for heating or cooling.
  2. Max Airflow: The max airflow of the DP04 is 887 cubic feet per minute, while the HP02 has a max airflow of 423 cubic feet per minute. That’s almost twice the airflow, which can largest be attributed to the larger amplifier. (13.9″ wide on the DP04 vs. 6″ wide on the HP02).
  3. HEPA Filtration: The DP04 has the improved Glass HEPA Media filtration, which offers 60% improved filtration over the 360 Glass HEPA filter lie what it on the HP02.
  4. Overall Size: The DP04 is about 2″ taller and about 1.6 pounds heavier than the HP02 While not a huge difference, it feels noteworthy to add this detail.

Dyson DP04 air purifier

The Dyson DP04 air purifier is an excellent option for people who are looking for the best performance (more airflow and improved filtration) and don’t mind the slightly larger size.

Best Features:

  • Air Multiplier technology

  • wifi-connectivity for smartphone control
  • includes voice control (using an Amazon device like Echo or Dot)
  • aromatically senses pollutants and adjusts as necessary

Best Uses:

  • Small Spaces
  • Cooling
  • Asthma/Allergy Relief
  • Smartphone Control

Which Dyson Air Purifier Should You Buy?

Between these four models, Dyson offers something for everybody, regardless of what you’re looking for in an air purifier, if you’re willing to foot the bill.

Here are some of my top recommendation for different needs:

If you’re looking for the best airflow, I would recommend the:

If you’re looking for the best compact size, I would recommend the:

  • Dyson Pure Heat & Cool Link HP02 – This desktop model has an overall height of only 24.9″ and a max amp diameter of only 6″ wide. While this does mean less airflow, it also means that it’s got a sleeker look and can neatly fit in corners or compact spaces without obstruction.

If you’re looking for the best filtration, I would recommend the:

Both of the models listed above use the Glass HEPA Media filter which is 60% more effective over the 360 Glass HEPA filter and offer 3 times more carbon for an improved clean.

With that in mind, I will also note that all of the Dyson air purifiers listed above have the powerful UV light for 99% removal of bacteria and contaminants as well being certified Asthma and Allergy defense systems.

Lastly, if you’re looking for an air purifier that is a fan and a heater too, I would recommend the:

  • Dyson Pure Heat & Cool Link HP02 Desk Air Purifier – This is the only model currently that performs the function of purifier, fan and heater. For year-round use, the Dyson HP02 desktop air purifier is an excellent option, and arguably the best overall air purifier within the Dyson lineup.
