Pros of Dyson Air Purifiers

  • Bladeless. Dyson air purifiers use the same technology as the Dyson fans for bladeless purifiers. This helps to eliminate the build-up of dust and debris around small parts that can be hard to clean.
  • Real Time Air Quality. Dyson Pure air purifiers automatically sense and display real-time air quality, allowing the unit to respond when needed and rest when not needed.
  • Available in Heat or Cool Mode. There are Dyson purifiers that can heat or cool air, as well as purify the air, depending on your need or the season.

Cons of Dyson Air Purifiers

  • Expensive. Dyson air purifiers are costly items and might not be worth it unless you really need cleaner air.
  • Pricey Filters. Dyson branded replacement filters aren’t cheaper. However, there are 3rd party filters available that are significantly less expensive (reducing overall maintenance costs).

Dyson TP vs. HP vs. DP vs. BP Model Series

The selection of Dyson air purifiers can be broken down into a 4 different model families that range in size and features. For the sake of simplicity, you can think about the Dyson naming convention using the key below.

  • BP Series = Body Cooling Air Purifiers: This series only includes the Dyson Pure Cool Me BP01 air purifier and is the newest purifier to his the market from Dyson. It’s small and designed purifier in a small space.
  • TP Series = Tower Cooling Air Purifiers: This series includes the Dyson Pure Cool TP01, TP02, and TP04. These are tall, tower-style cooling air purifiers that use the Pure Cool Dyson technology to deliver cooled purifier air to large spaces.
  • DP Series = Desk Cooling Air Purifiers: This series includes the Pure Cool DP01, DP02, DP03, and DP04. These models are cooling air purifiers designed to sit on your desk or tabletop. They use the Pure Cool Dyson technology and can have a round or oval amp, depending on the model.
  • HP Series = Heating Air Purifiers: This series includes the HP01, HP02, and HP04. These purifiers are more compact, like the DP series, but larger than the BP series. In addition, they have both heating and cooling capabilities.

NOTE ABOUT “04” PURIFIERS: As a general rule, Dyson air purifiers with the “04” designation at the end will have the most advanced features to date. This includes increased oscillation and improved filters (HEPA + activated carbon filters)

What size Dyson do you need?

Dyson has three main sizes of air purifiers available – tower, compact, or personal.

Here’s what you need to know about each.

Tower

8.8″ x 41.5″H
(TP04 shown)

Compact / Desk

Dyson DP04 air purifier
8.8″ x 27.2″H

Personal

(BP01 shown)

Dyson Tower Air Purifier

The Tower air purifier is about 40″ tall, give or take depending on the exact model, and is designed to move a larger amount of air in a shorter amount of time.

Dyson Pure Cool TP04 air purifier size
Dyson TP04 size

Both of the tower air purifier models (the TP02 and the TP04) have an elongated oval amp which allows air to flow freely through. The amplifier conditions the air as it travels through and is the technology that allows the system to be bladeless.

Does fan size = Room size?

Not necessarily.

According to Dyson, you can use the Desk Purifier or Tower Purifier for any sized room, the difference is just the amount of time that the desk fan will take to condition and treat the room. The smaller fan will obviously take a big longer than the larger Tower Fan will.

Dyson Desk Air Purifier

The desk air purifier is about half the height of the Dyson Tower Air Purifier. It’s designed to sit on a desk or table top and circulate / purify air throughout a given space.

The Dyson HP02 has an airflow of 200 liters/second, meaning it will take roughly twice as long to condition your air as the Dyson TP02, which can move air at up to 410 liters/second.

Dyson fans - air purifiers

Round vs. Oval Amplifiers?

In addition to height, the other main difference is the size of the amplifier. On the desk purifiers, the amp can either be round, like on the DP04 or oval, like on the HP02.

Dyson Pure Cool DP04 air purifier review
Dyson Pure Cool DP04 air purifier review

Although it takes up a bit more space, the round amp moves about twice the amount of air as the oval amp  (419 liters/second on the DP04 vs. 200 liters/second on the HP02.

Dyson Personal Air Purifier

The newest (and smallest) Dyson air purifier on the market right now is the Dyson Pure Cool Me BP01. It’s currently the only personal air purifier size available.

This purifier is the only model that doesn’t have an open amplifier design and doesn’t oscillate.

It does however, have the ability to change the targeted direction, directing air right where it is needed.

The Dyson BP01 allows you to change air direction by simple swiping your hand up or down on the face of the purifier.

Dyson Air Purifier Design

The design of Dyson air purifiers have a few common elements between all models. These elements are generally consistent across all Dyson models and makes up some of the notable features that makes a Dyson a Dyson.

Some of these design elements include:

1. Bladeless Airflow Movement

All Dyson air purifiers are bladeless.

What’s that mean?

As mentioned above, they have an amp that treats the air as it flows through. The bladeless design is easier to clean and can wiped down with a dry or damp cloth.

Dyson air purifier

2. Quiet Operation

The bladeless design also allows for quieter operation.

Dyson Pure Cool TP04 air intake

Traditional fans vs. Dyson purifiers:

Traditional fans make noise by constantly “chopping” the air as they rotate. In terms of air purifiers specifically, the rotating fans may be less relevant, as most purifiers do not double as fans, but its feels worth mentioning.

3. Dual Purpose: Purifier + Fan

Dyson air purifiers all double as fans providing dual purpose within a single unit. This is unusual for most other air purifiers outside of the Dyson lineup.

Dyson dual-mode heaters and fan

In addition to operating as a fan and a purifier, they also they also have the added bonus of offering models with heating and cooling (like the HP series) or just cooling only (like the TP series, DP series, or BP series).

4. App Control (via Dyson Link)

Dyson Link technology is what makes your fan accessible from your smartphone.

NOTE: It’s important to note than not all Dyson purifiers are compatible with app control, but all purifiers that ARE, rely on the Dyson Link app as the central control hub.

Using the Link app, Dyson air purifiers are able to sense and report stats about the air quality in the room. When conditions dip below a certain level, the system will automatically turn on and the purifier will begin to treat the air.

Dyson Link App
Dyson Link App

For reference, the Dyson Link app allows the following quick functions:

  1. Purifier Activity – Monitors air quality and recommends action with needed.
  2. Filter Life – Studies the quality of the filter and will let you know when it’s time to replace.
  3. Remote Control – Allows you to remotely control the air purifier without touching the actual unit.

5. Asthma & Allergy Friendly

All Dyson air purifiers are considered Asthma + Allergy Friendly. They are certified by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America and meet the stringent qualifications.

Dyson TP04 air purifier filters
Dyson TP04 air purifier filters

Dyson air purifiers use either:

  • A single HEPA filter OR
  • Glass HEPA filter combined with an activated carbon filter

Both of these filtration strategies are designed to effectively filter all incoming air particulate down to 0.3 microns.

True HEPA filters stop particles from traveling into clean air
How HEPA filters trap particulates

The addition of the activated carbon filter is good for tackling odors and VOCs in the air, but if your main concern is allergens and debris, the standard HEPA should still be sufficient.

5. Modern Aesthetics

A Dyson air purifier feels modern, sleek and simple.

There are limited numbers of buttons and no knobs or obstructive add-ons.

Dyson Pure Cool TP04 air purifier
Dyson Pure Cool TP04 air purifier

At least 50% of each model is designated to the open amplifier which is the main entry point where air enters and is treated before being recycled back into the room.

NOTE: This rule is excluding the newly released Dyson Pure Cool Me BP01, which is the only “ampless” purifier currently in the Dyson lineup.

In addition, Dyson air purifiers come in a range of conservative, yet modern and attractive colors. Exact colors vary by model, but generally includes:

  • Silver
  • White
  • Blue
  • Iron

Dyson Air Purifier Quality

When talking about quality, the Dyson air purifiers is going to be pretty on-par with other Dyson products, like Dyson fans or Dyson vacuums. They are expensive, but the added cost is generally reflective of the higher quality of a Dyson product.

Dyson Pure Cool TP04 air purifier
Dyson Pure Cool TP04 air purifier

Dyson air purifiers are made with high quality materials, quality parts, and designed in an intentional and sleek way.

Usability

Concerning usability, Dyson air purifiers are smart and attune to the air quality of the room that it’s placed in.

Here’s a run down of the process:

  1. Place Dyson air purifier in room and turn on.
  2. Set it to auto mode.
  3. Purifier monitors and measures air quality and reports it back to your smartphone using the Link app.
  4. When air quality drops, it can automatically increase speed to bring particulates back to healthy levels.

How does a Dyson air purifier work?

  1. The Dyson system pulls air through a fine mesh filter as the first step in the treatment process.
  2. Air is further treated using a HEPA filter (exact filter varies by model) and an activated carbon filter (depending on model).
  3. Once the job is done, the clean air is redirected out the amplifier and distributed throughout the room.

How to Clean a Dyson air purifier?

For the purifier to work at peak performance, its important to keep the unit clean.

Since this purifier is bladeless, it’s a simple process.

To clean the air purifier:

  1. Wipe down the amplifier using a dry or damp cloth.
  2. Vacuum around any vents or crevices (handheld vacuum with a dusting brush, like the Dyson Trigger, is great for this)

How to use the Dyson remote control?

The remote comes with all current Dyson air purifiers and is a handy tool if you don’t want to connect it to your smartphone for whatever reason. Using the physical remote control, you can adjust basically any setting on the purifier.

For convenience, there is also a magnetic back to the remote which allows it to magnetize to the top of the amplifier for storage.

SUPPORT: Already have a Dyson air purifier, but lost the remote? No problem– you can buy a replacement remote here.

How to connect a Dyson to your smartphone?

All of the current generation Dyson air purifiers come with Link technology. This technology is what is used to monitor air quality and recommend action as needed.

Link is accessible using the Dyson app on your smartphone. In order to setup Link, you’ll need to have access to a wifi network.

How to see real-time air quality?

Real-time sensing and response is made possible using the app. In addition to the app, most Dyson air purifiers also have a small round screen at the bottom which shows current air quality.

This screen is simple, easy, to read and shows important information about the quality of the air. It will also notify you when it’s time to replace the HEPA filter.

Dyson Air Purifier Value

The cost of a Dyson air purifier varies depending on the exact model you go with, but they are certainly not cheap units.

That being said, you do get a long of bang for your buck.

Dyson TP04 remote
Dyson TP04 remote control

If the following features are important to you, a Dyson air purifier can be a good value considering all that you get.

Here’s a quick run down of features that add to its overall value:

  • Dual purpose. This unit acts as an air purifier as well as a fan that can be used for heating or cooling (depending on the model)
  • Smartphone control. Dyson air purifiers can be controlled with your smartphone (as long as they are compatible with the Link technology)
  • Remote control. Regardless of whether or not they have Link, all Dyson air purifiers come with a remote control to adjust the speed and oscillation without having to manually press the unit.
  • Bladeless. Bladeless Dyson fans, purifiers, and humidifiers are amazingly easy to clean and also cut down on choppy air noise.
  • Asthma + Allergy Friendly. If allergies or discomfort from asthma are top priorities for you, all Dyson air purifier are certified to be allergy and asthma friendly, in association with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America

Best Dyson Air Purifiers

So you like the sound of a Dyson air purifier?

There are quite a few different Dyson models on the market currently, but all of them can be divided into two technology camps…Pure Cool or Pure Hot + Cool.

  • Dyson air purifiers with Pure Cool technology are designed to purify and cool the air.
  • Dyson air purifier with Pure Hot + Cool technology can be used to purify, heat, and cool the air.

What is Dyson’s “Pure” Technology?

Dyson Pure is a system that is currently utilized in all of the Dyson air purifiers to date, avaiable as “Pure Cool” or “Pure Cool + Hot”.

This technology combines HEPA and carbon activated filtration. With this system, the Dyson air purifier is able to remove 99.97% of allergens and remove gasses in the air.

HEPA filtration helps to capture even finer particles and contaminants before dispersing back into the air.

Differences between Dyson TP02 vs. TP04

  1. THE SCREEN | TP04 has an upgraded LCD display for clearer readings, more sensors, 350 degree oscillation and a new backward mode for variable airflow.
  2. THE FILTER | The TP04 also has a more advanced filtration, with 60% more HEPA and 3 times more carbon in the filter. This filter is called the Glass HEPA Media vs. the 360 Glass HEPA like what is found with the TP02 model.
  3. THE AIRFLOW | Regarding airflow, the TP04 has a max of 361 liters/second. Compared to the TP02, this is 12% less airflow, but better filtration so this could be a bit of a wash between the two models.
  4. THE SIZE | It also has a slightly wider amp and is about three pounds heavier (10.98 lbs. vs. 8.4 lbs).

The Dyson Pure Cool DP01 air purifier is Dyson’s first iteration of a compact Pure Cool purifier for a desk or tabletop. While you can find it at some retailers, it is mostly discontinued and increasingly difficult to find.

Dyson Pure Cool Link DP02 Air Purifier

We are assuming that the Dyson Pure Cool Link DP02 was an available model very briefly, but was quickly discontinued.

Dyson.com makes no mention of this model and their support staff denies that the model ever existed. The Pure Cool DP01 and Pure Cool DP04 remain the most popular and widely available models for a compact air purifier.

Dyson Pure Cool Link DP03 Air Purifier

Similar story for the Dyson DP03 air purifier — it may have been released briefly, but would have been short lived and difficult to find.

Dyson.com makes no mention of this model and their support staff does not acknowledge this model at any level.

We were unable to find any other information about the Dyson DP03 air purifier.

Dyson Pure Cool Link DP04 Air Purifier

Dyson Pure Cool DP04 air purifier
Dyson Pure Cool DP04 air purifier

The Dyson Pure Cool Link DP04 air purifier is another desktop air purifier, like the HP02, but with a couple significant differences.

The Dyson DP04 air purifier is an excellent option for people who are looking for the best performance (more airflow and improved filtration) and don’t mind the slightly larger size.

You can find our full Dyson DP04 review here.

Dyson DP04 vs. HP02 Differences

  1. THE MODES | The DP04 only has a mode for cooling, while the HP02 has a mode for heating or cooling.
  2. THE AIRFLOW | The max airflow of the DP04 is 887 cubic feet per minute, while the HP02 has a max airflow of 423 cubic feet per minute. That’s almost twice the airflow, which can largest be attributed to the larger amplifier. (13.9″ wide on the DP04 vs. 6″ wide on the HP02).
  3. THE FILTER| The DP04 has the improved Glass HEPA Media filtration, which offers 60% improved filtration over the 360 Glass HEPA filter like what it on the HP02.
  4. THE SIZE | The DP04 is about 2″ taller and about 1.6 pounds heavier than the HP02 While not a huge difference, it feels noteworthy to add this detail.

  • Airflow Direction: Forward Only
  • Max Airflow: 200 liters/second
  • Best For: Small to medium spaces
Dyson HP02 air purifier

The Dyson Pure Hot & Cool Link HP02 air purifier is a desktop fan that has three purposes. It is a desk fan, an air purifier, and a heater.

A few things on design …

Although it is more compact, it has the same dual filter system and is certified to be Allergy and Asthma friendly.

The HP02 can oscillate and tilt. This allows you to have a bit more control when directing the air.

Air flow specs:

In terms of airflow, the HP02 has a max rate of 200 liters/second.

While this is less than the rate of the TP02 or TP04 tower fans, it’s still a considerable amount of air. Given enough time, this little guy could still treat a larger space like the tower purifiers, it would just take longer.

Dyson Pure Hot & Cool Link HP03 Air Purifier

According to Dyson, there is no Dyson HP03 model.

Similar to the gaps in the other model styles, it would be our best guess that the HP03 may have been around briefly and then discontinued before it reached popularity.

Regardless, if you’re looking for a Dyson heater, fan, and air purifier the Pure Hot + Cool HP01, HP02, or HP04 would be your best options.

Dyson Pure Hot & Cool Link HP04 Air Purifier

  • Mode: Cooling + Heating

  • Best For: Medium to large spaces
Dyson HP04 Hot Cold air purifier
Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Link HP04 air purifier

The Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Link HP04 air purifier is the newest version of the Dyson heater + cooling air purifier. As improvements over the HP02, the HP04 has upgraded filters, an increased degree of oscillation and increased max air flow.

In fact, the max airflow of 310 liters/second is only 50 liters/second less than the Dyson Pure Cool TP04 full size tower purifier. If you want heating and cooling, but don’t want sacrifice much airflow, the HP04 is a solid option.

You can find our Dyson HP04 review here.

Which Dyson Air Purifier Should You Buy?

Between these models, Dyson offers something for everybody, regardless of what you’re looking for in an air purifier.

Here are some of our top recommendation for different needs:

Best for Large Rooms

If you’re looking for the best airflow, I would recommend the:

Best Small Size

If you’re looking for the best compact size, I would recommend the:

  • Dyson Pure Heat & Cool Link HP02 – This desktop model has an overall height of only 24.9″ and a max amp diameter of only 6″ wide. While this does mean less airflow, it also means that it has got a sleeker look and can neatly fit in corners or compact spaces without obstruction.
  • Dyson Pure Cool Me BP01 – If you’re looking for something even smaller and don’t need the added feature of wifi-connectivity, the BP01 could be a great option. This purifier is the smaller Dyson air purifier to date and is designed for personal cooling, right where you need it.

Best Filtration

If you’re looking for the best filtration, I would recommend the:

Both of the models listed above use the 360 Glass HEPA filter, which removes 99.7% of allergens and particulates that pass over it.

With that in mind, I will also note that all of the Dyson air purifiers listed above are certified Asthma and Allergy defense systems.

Lastly, if you’re looking for an air purifier that is a fan and a heater too, I would recommend the:

  • Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Link HP02  – The HP Series is the only collection of Dyson air purifiers that currently offer heating and cooling options. The HP02 is the slightly older model, compared to the newer HP04, but also has a lower price tag.
  • Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Link HP04 – The HP04 is the most advanced heater and cooler in the Dyson lineup currently. The HP04 can oscillate more (350° on the HP04 vs. only 180° on the HP02) and has a “backward airflow” setting which allows air to flow backwards for indirect purification.

  1. Great article, but your conclusion seems incorrect. Earlier in the article you state that the TP02 uses the 360 filtration technology, but the recommended best filtration option puts it at the Glass HEPA level..

    • Thanks, Don! And thanks for bringing this to my attention. Looks like we had a typo in that last section (fixed now).

  2. Hi
I purchased the TP04 however the night setting is pants and about as cooling as my wife blowing cold air over my face. Would the Fan version have been better than the air purifier? would it have been quieter?

I just need an alternative to air con in the Townsville summer

    • Hey Rick,

The standalone fan would not have been any different. The Dyson air purifier and fan use the same basic technology. Noise level will be more or less the same.

Have you considered a portable air conditioner? Something like this – https://amzn.to/2Wq00PW – should be cheaper to run it in just your bedroom at night vs. trying to cool your whole home with central AC.

  3. Great article. I was about to buy the TP04 but when I look at the comparison chart, what is the point to buy the TP04 over the DP04 since it’s better in any way? It’s does the same job but smaller (so takes less space), has more airflow and is cheaper. Please enlighten me lol.

    • Fair point.

It really is a matter of aesthetics. The TP04 takes up more vertical space a little less space width-wise.

But in terms of raw performance, the DP04 is a bit better in airflow.

And for English speakers…Dany asked which Dyson is best for smoke. Here is our response in English:

The 4th generation Dyson air purifiers are definitely going to be best for smoke, due to the more advanced HEPA filter and the addition of a thick carbon filter.

I would go with either the Dyson TP04 or Dyson DP04, depending on which form factor you prefer.

  4. Hi can’t choose between TP04 and HP04 heat function is nice but I can’t find any test for filtration on the HP04 u only did test on TP04 and rated TP04 best for filtration when u haven’t tested the HP04 my reason for asking as am leaning more for filtration and square footage that it covers than cooling and heating as those are 2nd priority

    • If filtration is your primary concern you should go with the TP04.

While TP04 and HP04 use the same filters, the TP04 has almost twice the effective square foot coverage due to higher air flow. Definitely go with the TP04.
