Purification Performance
Our purification performance tests measure how well the Jya Fjord can remove particulates from the air. We do this by placing the air purifier in a medium sized room in our office and take a baseline measurement of the air quality.
We then let the Jya Fjord run on the maximum fan speed for 1 hour and measure the air quality again for post-test data.
To determine the performance of the air purifier, we can then compare the difference between the starting baseline and post-test data.
Starting Baseline
- PM2.5: 1.5
- PM10: 2.3
- Particles: 626
- AQI: 6
After 1 Hour
- PM2.5: 0.1
- PM10: 0.1
- Particles: 53
- AQI: 2
Within the 1 hour test, the Jya Fjord removed 91.5% of air particulates from the medium-sized room we tested in (~14’x10’).
The Jya Fjord improved PM2.5 air quality by 93.3%
We got these measurements thanks to the Temtop LKC-1000S+ professional air quality detector. This device allows us to get precise readings and performance bearings before and after the test.
Below, we’ve included information on the testing criteria and what defines good vs. bad air quality.
The Filters
To purify the surrounding air, the Jya Fjord uses a 4-stage filtration system. The filters include:
- Pre-filter
- Activated carbon filter
- HEPA filter
- UV sterilization
The pre-filter catches larger debris, while the activated carbon filter removes VOCs and other odors from the air.
Behind that, the HEPA filter catches particulates like dust, pollen, mold, or any airborne particles with a size of 0.3 microns or larger.
Finally, the UV sterilization is activated when the lightbulb is installed. This constant light slowly kills bacteria and other harmful particulates that reside inside the device.
Besides the UV light, the other filters are combined into one unit that can be replaced as a whole.
Noise Test
To test the noise level of the Jya Fjord, we have the air purifier run on each mode and measure the level of noise generated with a sound meter from about 3’ away.
Our results showed the following decibel levels from each mode.
Low
24.1 dB
Medium
32.4 dB
High
51.7 dB
The Jya Fjord’s noise range of 24-52 dB is average compared to other air purifiers we’ve tested. At its loudest it is similar in noise to moderate rainfall. If you are worried about noise, it does run much quieter in its sleep mode.
Common noise levels:
- 20 dB – rustling leaves
- 30 dB – whisper
- 40 dB – quiet library, babbling brook
- 50 dB – refrigerator, moderate rainfall
- 60 dB – normal conversation, dishwashers
- 70 dB – traffic, showers
- 80 dB – alarm clock, telephone dial tone
Usability Tests
Overall usability for the Jya Fjord was excellent. It was easy to set up, use, and maintain. What’s more, it has some incredibly smooth wheels that make it easy to roll around to new locations.
Setup
Initial setup for the Fjord is incredibly simple.
There are only 3 things that come in the box:
- Fjord air purifier
- Power cord
- Manual
To set up the Fjord you will want to make sure to remove any packaging from around the filter. From there you simply plug in the power cord to the device then the wall.
Controls & App
Controls are surprisingly robust for the Jya Fjord. To turn the device on/off you use a small power button on the back. From there, you will interact with the touch display screen on the front.
Not only will this display air quality information, but via swipes and taps you can adjust various settings of the Fjord.
For the most control of the Jya Fjord you will want to connect it to the Smartmi Link app. The setup process is simple and takes just a few minutes to connect.
From there you get access to all the features the Fjord has to offer:
- Fan speed controls
- Sleep mode
- Auto mode
- Timers
- Air quality data
- UV lamp control
- Sound control
The app is easy to use and has an intuitive interface. The scheduling tool is a little hidden behind the timers, but it is fully customizable.
In addition, you can set up the ability to control the air purifier with Google Assistant or Alexa in the app.
Maintenance
There are two main tasks needed to keep the Jya Fjord running. These include:
- Replacing the filter
- Replacing the UV lamp
Inside the air purifier is a single compact filter that will need to be replaced as a whole. The device has built-in indicators on the screen and in-app to notify you when to replace the filter.
In our experience, we find HEPA filters need to be replaced every 8-12 months, depending on use and environment.
The Fjord will also notify you when the UV lamp will need to be replaced.
Otherwise, you may need to occasionally wipe down the device and clean off sensors.
