TALL SMART AIR PURIFIER

Trusens Z White

TruSens Z-3500

The TruSens Z-3500 is a smart air purifier with excellent performance. Our tests showed it was able to improve PM2.5 air quality by 98.7% and remove 92.6% of particulates in the air. It is a tall device that is made easy to move with a handle. Because of the size, the Z-3500 can cover 1,425 sq. ft. With an auto mode and custom scheduling, the TruSens is a great choice for a hands-off air purifier.

Pros

  • Auto mode and custom schedules
  • Large coverage area
  • Excellent purification performance

Cons

  • Auto mode requires the SensorPod
  • Large size, but lightweight and handle makes it easier to move

Summary

The TruSens Z-3500 is a tall air purifier with great usability features. The large size comes with a large coverage area of 1,425 sq. ft. and great performance. In our tests, the Z-3500 reduced PM2.5 and PM10 to 0.1 and removed 92.6% of airborne particulates. It has an auto mode, custom scheduling, app connectivity, and more. Overall, it is an excellent air purifier with great hands-off features.

Purification Test

Our purification test places the TruSens Z-3500 in a medium sized room in our office. We take a baseline measurement using the Temtop LKC-1000S+ professional air quality detector, which gives us precise readings and performance bearings of the current air quality.

Then, I let the TruSense Z-3500 run on the highest power setting for 1 hour and measure the air quality to get another set of measurements.

We can then compare the difference between the starting baseline and the post-run data to determine the performance of the TruSens Z-3500.

Starting Baseline

  • PM2.5: 7.8
  • PM10: 12.8
  • Particles: 584
  • AQI: 32

After 1 Hour

  • PM2.5: 0.1
  • PM10: 0.1
  • Particles: 43
  • AQI: 2

At the conclusion of our 1 hour test the Z-3500 removed 92.6% of air particulates from the medium-sized room we tested in (~14’x10’).

The TruSens Z-3500 improved PM2.5 air quality by 98.7%.

Below, we’ve included information on the testing criteria and what defines good vs. bad air quality.

air quality index - PM 2.5 particulate matter index
Air quality index – PM 2.5 particulate matter index

The TruSens did an excellent job during our tests, reducing PM2.5 and PM10 to 0.1. This is basically as good as it gets when it comes to air purification performance.

The Filters

To achieve this excellent performance, the TruSens uses a 4 part filtration system. These filters include:

  • Pre-filter
  • HEPA filter
  • Activated carbon filter
  • UV-C filter

The pre-filter catches the larger airborne particulates and stops them from entering the device.

The main filter, the HEPA filter, covers 360° and catches particulates as small as 0.3 microns.

Working with the HEPA filter, the activated carbon filter helps to reduce odors and reduce VOCs.

Finally, the UV light filter is an optional filter that, when turned on, inactivates airborne pathogens like mold, bacteria, and viruses.

Noise Test

Next, we tested how loud the TruSense Z-3500 is while it runs. To do this, we run the air purifier on each mode, and measure the noise levels via a sound meter from about 3’ away.

Our results showed the following decibel levels from each mode.

Power ModeNoise Level
Whisper17.6 dB
123.7 dB
229.5 dB
342.2 dB
Turbo52.3 dB

Overall, we found the noise range for the Z-3500 to be between 17-53 dB. This level of sound, at the loudest, is similar to the sound of moderate rainfall.

Usability Test

The TruSens Z-3500 includes many key usability features we look for.. It’s easy to use, albeit different from other air purifiers we have tested in the path. The reason being the inclusion of some unique accessories from TruSens.

Setup

Setting up the TruSens Z-3500 is a little more involved if you want access to all the features.

Here’s the full list of setup steps:

  1. Remove all excess packaging
  2. Removing plastic around filter (pre-installed)
  3. Reinstall filter
  4. Plug in SensorPod within line of sight of the Z-3500 on a counter or tabletop.
  5. Plug in Z-3500

While the process is simple and quick, it does take a little more than other air purifiers we have tested. The Z-3500 will still function without the SensorPod, however, you won’t be able to use the auto mode.

Controls & App

To control the device you can use the physical touch screen located on the top of the device. This panel has multiple buttons that allow you to change various settings of the device.

Additionally, the control panel also has a display that will give real-time information on the current air quality. This information is made available via the SensorPod accessory. Via these sensors, the device can also utilize auto-mode to automatically adjust the fan speed based on the real-time data it receives.

If you want additional functionality, you can download the TruSens App and connect it to the Z-3500.

The app will walk you through the setup process and give the ability to control the device remotely. With the app you can control the same functions as on the touch panel as well as a few additional features.

These include:

  • More precise filter life information
  • AQI history reports
  • Set up a custom schedule
  • Check outdoor air quality via the web
  • Connect Z-3500 with Alexa

The app is easy to use and further improves the usability of the TruSens.

Maintenance

Upkeep for the Z-3500 is easy and involves replacing the various filters. The whole filter unit can be replaced as a whole or replacing individual filters as needed. The TruSens will notify you when individual filters need to be replaced via the touch panel and app if you have it connected.

TruSens states you can expect to replace the carbon filter every 3-4 months, the HEPA filter every 12-15 months, and the UV bulb every 1-3 years.

Overall, replacing the various filters is fairly simple, however, replacing the UV bulb will require a screwdriver.
