Small air purifier with excellent performance

AirDoctor 1000

AirDoctor 1000

The AirDoctor 1000 is a small air purifier with a 4-part filtration system. In our purification tests, the air purifier reduced airborne particulates from 359 to 10 and improved PM2.5 by 97.2%. It can run fairly quietly for night time use, has a touch screen panel, and an auto mode for more hands-off purification. What it lacks in features, it more than makes up for in coverage area and raw performance.

Pros

  • Great purification performance
  • Incredibly easy to use
  • Small size that can cover a medium sized area

Cons

  • No app connectivity or remote
  • On the pricey side for this coverage level

Summary

The AirDoctor 1000 is a simple, compact air purifier. It lacks app connectivity or a remote control option, but makes up for it in purification power. Our testing showed the air purifier reduced PM2.5 down to 0.1 and PM10 down to 0.2. Despite the lack of wireless control, it still offers timers, an auto mode, and an option to dim the lights. It’s a bit pricey for this coverage level, but if you are considering a small air purifier, the AD1000 is a great option.

Purification Performance

In order to test the purification performance of the AirDoctor 1000, we placed it in a medium sized room in our office. Before turning the air purifier on, we took a baseline measurement of the air quality and then set the AD1000 to max power.

AirDoctor 1000

After letting it run for 1 hour, we take another measurement of the air quality and compare it to the baseline data. From that comparison we can analyze the purification performance of the AirDoctor 1000.

Starting Baseline

  • PM2.5: 2.0
  • PM10: 3.5
  • Particles: 359
  • AQI: 8

After 1 Hour

  • PM2.5: 0.1
  • PM10: 0.2
  • Particles: 10
  • AQI: 1

After the 1 hour test the AirDoctor 1000 was able to remove 95.0% of airborne particulates and improve PM2.5 air quality by 97.2%.

To get these measurements, we used the Temtop LKC-1000S+ professional air quality detector. This device gives us precise readings for our baseline and post-test data.

Below we’ve included information on our testing criteria and what defines good vs. bad air quality. Simply put, the lower the number the better.

The Filters

Inside the AirDoctor 1000 is a 4-stage filtration system including:

  • Pre-filter
  • Activated carbon filter
  • HEPA filter
  • Negative ion generator

First, the pre-filter catches the larger airborne particulates, like dirt or hair.

Next, the AD1000 eliminates odors and VOCs via the activated carbon filter.

The HEPA filter does the majority of the work capturing particles as small as 0.003 microns.

Finally, the optional negative ion generator will attach negative ions to particles floating in the air. They will then stick to surfaces to be wiped away later.

Noise Test

To test the noise levels of the AirDoctor 1000, we use a noise meter from about 3’ away and run the air purifier on each power setting.

Our results showed the following decibel levels from each mode.

Low

39.2 dB

Medium

39.6 dB

High

41.4 dB

Max

51.4 dB

Our testing showed the AirDoctor 1000 to have a noise range of 39 – 52 dB.

If noise is a concern while you sleep, the AD100 should be sufficiently quiet, especially on the lower end.

Common noise levels:

  • 20 dB – rustling leaves
  • 30 dB – whisper
  • 40 dB – quiet library, babbling brook
  • 50 dB – refrigerator, moderate rainfall
  • 60 dB – normal conversation, dishwashers
  • 70 dB – traffic, showers
  • 80 dB – alarm clock, telephone dial tone

Usability Tests

Usability for the AirDoctor 1000 is good, but not amazing. It has some useful features, like auto mode, but lacks app connectivity or any form of wireless control. AirDoctor foregoes these features, and focuses more on purification performance.

Setup

The AirDoctor 1000 was incredibly easy to set up. Out of the box, the device is practically ready to run. You will need to plug in the power cord and open up the device to remove the packaging from around the filter before turning on.

This whole process takes less than 5 minutes for a single person.

Controls

As stated above, there is no app connectivity or remote control for the AirDoctor 1000. That being said, it does have a surprisingly robust touch control on the top of the device.

Via the controls you can:

  • Set a preset timer
  • Turn on/off negative ion generator
  • Dim lights
  • Check filter life
  • Turn on/off device
  • Change fan speed
  • Turn on/off auto mode

In addition to the touch buttons is a colored LED ring that conveys the current air quality based on the internal sensor readings.

Maintenance

Overall maintenance for the AirDoctor 1000 is fairly typical compared to other air purifiers. You will need to replace the filters over time and occasionally wipe down the sensors.

The HEPA filter and carbon filter are 2 separate pieces that allows the user to replace them independently as needed. HEPA filters need to be replaced every 6-12 months and carbon filters every 12 months, depending on use.

Size & Dimensions

The AirDoctor 1000 is on the smaller end of the AirDoctor air purifier line-up. It’s lightweight, which makes it easy to move around if needed.

Should you buy the AirDoctor 1000?

I would recommend the AirDoctor 1000 if you’re looking for the following features:

  • Excellent performance: Our purification tests showed the AirDoctor 1000 to have fantastic results. It was able to reduce PM2.5 down to 0.1 and remove 95% of the airborne particulates. Additionally, it uses a carbon filter to help eliminate VOCs and other odors.
  • Simple usability: While the AD1000 lacks wireless control options, it is incredibly easy to use. It has an intuitive touch-screen panel on the top that gives you access to all of the features. Setup is quick and maintenance is straightforward.
  • Medium coverage in a small device: In 1 hour the AirDoctor 1000 can cycle the air 4 times in a 285 sq. ft. space or 2 times in a 570 sq. ft. space. It has this excellent coverage despite its relatively small size. Furthermore, the lightweight design makes it easy to move around if you need to cover a different room.
