Summary
The Medify MA-112 is a large air purifier with fantastic performance. In our tests, we found the MA-112 was able to remove 99% of airborne particles and improve the PM2.5 by 98.9%. The large size is paired with a large coverage area of 5,000 sq. ft. in 60 minutes. It has wheels that make it easy to move around, a sleep mode, preset timers, and 5 stages of filtration. Overall, an excellent air purifier for maximum coverage.
Purification Test
To test the Medify MA-112, we set up the air purifier in a medium sized room in our office. I took a baseline measurement before starting the test to measure the current air quality. Then, I let the Medify MA-112 run on the highest setting for 1 hour and measured the air quality again.
We can then compare the difference between the starting baseline and the post-run data to determine the air purification performance of the Medify MA-112
Starting Baseline
- PM2.5: 9.1
- PM10: 14.6
- Particles: 1444
- AQI: 37
After 1 Hour
- PM2.5: 0.1
- PM10: 0.1
- Particles: 15
- AQI: 1
After the 1 hour test, the Medify MA-112 removed 99.0% of airborne particulates from the medium-sized room we tested in (~14’x10’).
The Medify MA-112 improved PM2.5 air quality by 98.9%.
In order to get these measurements, we used the Temtop LKC-1000S+ professional air quality detector. This device allows us to get precise readings and performance bearings before and after the test.
Below, we’ve included information on the testing criteria and what defines good vs. bad air quality.
With an air purifier this large, we expected good performance. During our tests, we found the MA-112 to have excellent performance. It was able to reduce the PM2.5 and PM10 to 0.1.
The Filters
The Medify uses 5 different filters to clean the surrounding air, however, the main filter is a H13 HEPA filter.
Here are all the included filters:
- Pre-filter
- HEPA filter
- Activated carbon filter
- UV light filter (optional)
- Ionic generator (optional)
The pre-filter is the first filter layer. It’s designed to capture the largest particulates and debris.
Next is the HEPA filter. It is doing most of the heavy lifting and captures particulates as small as 0.3 microns.
The third filter layer is the activated carbon filter, which removes VOCs and reduces odors.
The UV light filter is an optional filter that can be turned on/off with a button. This filter sterilizes passing air. When turned on the UV light will run for 20 minutes and turn off automatically.
Finally, you can turn on the ionizer, which charges airborne contaminants causing them to stick to nearby surfaces. Medify states their ionizer is ozone free. In any case, it’s optional and can be turned on/off with a tap of a button.
Noise Test
We also tested how loud the air purifier was while running. To perform this test we have the air purifier run on the different modes and use a sound meter to measure noise level. We tested the Medify MA-112 from about 3’ away.
Our results showed the following decibel levels from each mode.
Power Mode | Noise Level (dB) |
---|---|
Sleep | 21.2 dB |
1 | 24.5 dB |
2 | 30.2 dB |
3 | 37.6 dB |
4 | 48.5 dB |
In our tests, we found the noise level of the MA-112 to range between 21-46 dB. At the lower end, this is similar to a fan or white noise and great for sleep. At the higher end the noise level is closer to the hum of a refrigerator.
Common noise levels:
- 20 dB – rustling leaves
- 30 dB – whisper
- 40 dB – quiet library, babbling brook
- 50 dB – refrigerator, moderate rainfall
- 60 dB – normal conversation, dishwashers
- 70 dB – traffic, showers
- 80 dB – alarm clock, telephone dial tone
Usability Test
Using the Medify MA-112 is simple. It’s easy to move around due to installed wheels on the bottom. The power cord comes pre attached, and the simplicity of the device means there is little in the box.
Here is what comes with the MA-112:
- MA-112 air purifier
- 2x HEPA filter (pre-installed)
- User manual
Setup
The MA-112 is easy to set up. The most important step is simply removing the plastic around the filters. The filters come pre-installed inside the device, however, they are still wrapped in plastic. Once it is removed, you can plug in the device and turn it on.
Controls
On top of the air purifier is a touch panel to control the device. The MA-112 does not have app connectivity or an included remote. As a result, you are able to control all the functionality of the device from the touch panel.
From the touch panel you can:
- Turn device on/off
- Control fan speed (4 modes)
- Turn on the UV filter
- Use preset timers
- Toggle sleep mode
- Turn on Ionizer
- Check filter status
Unfortunately, there is no auto mode with the MA-112. However, having a sleep mode and timers is a nice addition.
Maintenance
To maintain the MA-112 you will need to replace the filter regularly. Medify recommends replacing the filter every 4-5 months or 3,000 hours. Generally, when you need to replace the filter depends on use. Luckily the MA-112 has a filter indicator light that will notify you when the filter needs to be replaced.
When you need to replace the filter, you open the sides of the MA-112 and remove the previous dirty filters. After replacing the new filters, you snap the side covers back in and reset the filter indicator light.
Size & Dimensions
The Medify MA-112 is a large air purifier. It came in an incredibly large box and stands tall at 28.3”. While it is large, it is still easy to move around due to wheels included on the base.
