Let’s start with our most expensive cordless vacuum, and arguably the best cordless stick vacuum ever manufactured.
Dyson Gen5 Detect & Outsize
Best For
- Excellent debris removal across all floor and debris types
- Nearly perfect performance with long and pet hair
- Enhanced usability with auto mode and built-in crevice tool
- Outsize version includes an extra battery and increased dust bin capacity for longer cleaning sessions
Considerations
- Expensive, even for a cordless stick
- Powerful suction may blow away smaller debris while cleaning
Why It’s Best
The Dyson Gen5 Detect is a powerful cordless stick vacuum with a high-quality build and enhanced usability. It packs an in-depth display with auto mode functionality. In addition, there is a crevice tool built into the extension wand for easy access.
Furthermore, you can choose between the standard and Outsize versions of the Gen5, which comes with an additional battery, larger cleaning head, and increased dust bin capacity.
Not only is usability enhanced, but the performance for the Gen5 Detect is exceptional. Across all floor and debris types it removed 98.4% of debris, had no long hair tangle on the brushroll, and completely removed the pet hair.
That said, this performance and bleeding edge tech comes at a cost. The Gen5 Detect and Outsize are expensive vacuums. The bleeding edge usability features, display, and sensors all come at a high cost.
Type: Cordless Stick
Bagless (Standard): Yes, 0.20 gallons
Bagless (Outsize): Yes, 0.50 gallons
Cordless: Yes, 72:19 run time
Dyson has a history of making fantastic quality devices and it’s no surprise that their latest cordless model is exceptional across the board. Both the Detect and Outsize variants offer fantastic cleaning performance and incredible usability.
In our debris removal tests, the Detect removed 98.4% of all debris and the Outsize removed 98.1% of the debris by weight. They both avoided hair tangles, removed all of the pet hair from the carpet, and had little issues with our crevice and edge tests.
Both vacuums are completely sealed with a high-quality build across the board. They have a similar run time, as they use the same batteries, but the Outsize includes an additional battery for extended cleaning. In addition, the Outsize has a larger dust bin capacity of 0.5 gallons compared to the Detect’s 0.2 gallons.
Both have a robust display that conveys device information and particulate data about the cleaning session. In addition, they have a built-in crevice tool, intelligently hidden within the extension wand of the vacuum. With a simple press of the button, you can easily transition to handheld mode and continue cleaning.
It’s expensive, but the performance and fantastic usability of the Dyson Gen5 is bleeding edge by any definition.

Dyson’s 2022 Flagship
Despite being two years older, the Dyson V15 and Gen5 are similar in many ways, including exceptional performance across the board. Across all floor types, it removed 99.4% of debris by weight. It has an auto mode, adjustable cleaning head, and 68 minute run time.
It may lack some of the new features we see in the Gen5 like the built-in crevice tool and repositioned button, but is comparable in practically every other way. And it comes at a much cheaper price.
If you like the quality and performance of the Gen5, but rather save a few bucks, this is a great alternative.
Value Cordless Vacuums
Now let’s move on to the cordless vacuums that fall in the middle of the pack, price-wise.
Shark Stratos Cordless
Best For
- 96.7% debris removal across all floor and debris types
- Practically perfect results with long and pet hair
- Longest run time on a single battery at 78 minutes
Considerations
- Slightly struggles with smaller debris on carpets
Why It’s Best
The Shark Stratos Cordless is a stick vacuum with a bendable extension wand, odor-neutralizing pods, and various attachments that make cleaning easier. The design is simple, but high-quality and well made.
While the Stratos isn’t the best performing cordless stick vacuum, it isn’t far off. It removed 96.7% of all debris across all floor types, having slightly more issue on carpet than hardwood. But, it managed long hair and pet hair without any problems. In addition, the vacuum dust bin and total cleaning system is completely sealed.
Despite the slight dip in performance, the asking price for the Stratos makes it an attractive offer all the same. It is still a powerful vacuum with fantastic cleaning performance and useful features that improve usability. Those factors, combined with the price, make it easy to recommend.
Type: Cordless Stick
Bagless (Standard): Yes, 0.10 gallons
Cordless: Yes, 78:50 run time
The Shark Stratos Cordless is a notable step up from previous Shark cordless vacuums, with fantastic cleaning results across all of our tests. It removed 96.7% of debris by weight, managed long and pet hair with minimal tangles, and had little issue removing debris close to edges and in crevices.
It packs the longest run time on a single battery with 78 minutes and 50 seconds on Eco mode and has “Clean Sense IQ” built-in for automatic suction adjustment. Additionally, the 0.1 gallon dust bin is completely sealed.
The Stratos Cordless comes with a variety of attachments including a bendable extension wand. In addition, it packs an odor-neutralizing pod that helps mask unwanted odors while cleaning.
While it isn’t quite as close to perfection as the ultra expensive Dyson Gen5, if you consider the asking price, it is an incredibly good value and an easy recommendation.

Samsung Bespoke Jet
Best For
- Auto empty charging station for reduced maintenance
- Removed 100% of the pet hair from the carpet
- 98.1% debris removal across all floor types
- An extra battery for increased run time
Considerations
- Dust bin occasionally remains open after self-emptying
Why It’s Best
The Samsung Bespoke Jet is designed to make the cleaning process even easier. With the docking station that not only charges the vacuum but empties the dust bin for you. Additionally, it has useful accessories, has an auto mode, and comes with an extra battery for extended run times.
Performance is fantastic for the Bespoke Jet as well. It removed 98.1% of debris during our tests, had a small amount of hair tangle in the brush roll, but managed all the pet hair with ease. Additionally, it released some smoke in our sealed system test, but not enough to warrant concern.
The auto-empty docking station, plethora of great accessories, and fantastic performance all combine together to create a fantastic device. When you factor in the price, it creates a fantastic device with excellent value.
Type: Cordless Stick
Bagless (Vacuum): Yes, 0.13 gal
Bagless (Dock): No, 0.43 gal
Cordless: Yes, 56:03 run time
Unlike the other cordless stick vacuums on this list, the Samsung Bespoke Jet comes with an auto-empty base on top of its already great performance. In our cleaning tests, it removed 98.1% of debris by weight, removed all of the pet hair, and had some minor tangling with long hair. The Bespoke Jet had no issues cleaning along the edge and little issue removing debris from crevices.
This vacuum, and the Samsung Jet 75, are the only vacuums on this list that are partially sealed. While some smoke escaped the device during our smoke sealant test, it wasn’t overly concerning.
The Bespoke Jet has a 0.13 gallon dust bin, which is fairly average, however, the auto-empty charging station is anything but. This robust docking station includes a 0.53 gallon dust bag that collects debris from the stick vacuum every time it charges. It reduces maintenance and enhances usability along with the other attachments that are included with the Samsung Bespoke Jet.
The run time is shorter than most other vacuums on this list with 56 minutes of life on the lowest power mode. However, it comes with an additional battery that effectively doubles the run time of the devices if needed.
Upon its initial release, the Bespoke Jet was fairly pricey. However, at its current price point, it is a fantastic deal.

Dyson V12 Detect Slim
Best For
- Lighter weight makes it easier to carry and move around, just 5.2 pounds
- Fantastic cleaning results, with 98.6% debris removal.
- Manages long and pet hair with ease
- Automatic suction and included accessories enhance usability
Considerations
- Small dust bin capacity at 0.1 gallons
- Run time is shorter than average
Why It’s Best
The Dyson V12 Detect Slim packs all the great design we see in other Dyson vacuums but in a smaller package. Its lighter weight makes it easier to carry and move around but gives up some dust bin capacity and run time to make up the difference. Otherwise, it packs an auto mode and accessories that aid in cleaning situations.
Performance was exceptional for the V12. It removed 98.6% of all debris, had no issue with hair, and was completely sealed.
While the V12 is slightly older than the latest devices from Dyson, it still packs incredible performance and excellent usability. Since it’s initial release the price has steadily decreased on the Detect Slim, further increasing the value. It’s a high-end vacuum at a mid-ranged price.
Type: Cordless Stick
Bagless (Vacuum): Yes, 0.10 gal
Cordless: Yes, 51:22 run time
While any number of Dyson vacuums could easily make this list, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim offers something unique. It’s the same high-quality design, but with a smaller form. That means a smaller dust bin, coming in at 0.1 gallons, but also a lighter weight. Weighing 5.2 pounds makes it much easier to carry around and maneuver while cleaning.
The V12 had fantastic results in our tests, removing 98.6% of all debris across all surfaces. Hair posed no issue for the vacuum and practically all of the debris was cleaned from the edge and crevices. In addition, the vacuum is completely sealed.
Beating only the Samsung Jet 75, the V12 has the 2nd shortest run time on a single battery life. On Eco mode it can last 51 minutes with the standard brushroll attached. Even so, the usability of the V12 Detect Slim is incredible. It’s lightweight, includes a plethora of attachments, and is equipped with a crisp display and particulate sensor providing real time information about what you’re cleaning.
Overall, this is the lightest stick vacuum on this list by far. If you like lighter, more maneuverable devices, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim is by far the best choice.

Budget Cordless Vacuums
Finally, let’s check out the least expensive vacuums on this list.
Samsung Jet 75
Best For
- Exceptional debris removal of 99.3%
- A variety of included accessories that aid in cleaning situations
- Filter is washable which reduces maintenance costs
Considerations
- Short run time at 44:19
- Dust bin wasn’t completely sealed
Why It’s Best
The Samsung Jet 75 is relatively simple in design compared to higher-end models. It packs a simple display, a set of accessories to aid in cleaning, and can lay down almost completely flat.
In addition, performance is quite excellent considering the asking price. It removed 99.3% of all debris across all floor types, cleaned up all the pet hair, but struggled more with long hair. 60% of the long strands tangled in the brush roll and needed to be removed after cleaning. In addition, the vacuum is partially sealed.
Despite these few shortcomings, the real selling point of the Samsung Jet 75 is the level of performance it reaches for the asking price. It’s hard to complain about nearly perfect debris removal performance at nearly half the price of other high end models.
Type: Cordless Stick
Bagless (Vacuum): Yes, 0.21 gal
Cordless: Yes, 44:19 run time
While the Samsung Jet 75 was released a number of years ago it is still a fantastic cordless vacuum, especially considering the price. It removed 99.3% of all debris in our tests, having perfect performance on hardwood floorings. It struggled with long hair, having the majority of it tangle around the brushroll, but managed pet hair without issue. Additionally, it removed all of the debris from the edge and crevices.
The Jet 75 packs a 0.21 gallon dustbin that is partially sealed. While some smoke escaped the device in our test, it wasn’t enough to warrant significant concern.
As mentioned previously, the Samsung Jet 75 has the shortest run time across all the cordless vacuums on this list. On the lowest power mode, the battery lasts 44 minutes meaning you will need to take more frequent charging breaks compared to other stick vacuums.
Like most stick vacuums, the Jet 75 is highly maneuverable and comes with a good variety of accessories to aid in cleaning situations. Most notably, it includes a soft-roller brush and mini motorized brush which only adds more value to a great-priced device.
If you want to avoid breaking the bank, but still want a lot of bang for your buck, the Samsung Jet 75 is a great choice.

Dyson V10
Best For
- 99.5% debris removed by weight across all floor types
- Little hair tangled and all the pet hair was removed
- Great price per performance
Considerations
- Lacks some of the new usability features
Why It’s Best
The Dyson V10 packed all the latest and greatest features available back in 2018 when it was released. It came with accessories to improve usability, an upgraded dustbin design compared to previous Dyson stick vacuums, and a 2-in-1 design.
While it may show its age in terms of features, the V10 doesn’t lack in cleaning performance. Across all floor types it removed 99.5% of debris, had little hair tangle, and completely removed the pet hair. Furthermore, the vacuum is completely sealed.
Despite the lack of features, the V10 is still a fantastic vacuum when it comes to cleaning. While high-end vacuums come with the latest technology, they cost a lot more. If all you need is a clean floor then it is hard to beat the value of the V10.
Type: Cordless Stick
Bagless (Vacuum): Yes, 0.20 gal
Cordless: Yes, 49:40 run time
Despite being the oldest stick vacuum, launching 2018, the Dyson V10 is still a fantastic stick vacuum. In our tests, it removed 99.5% of all debris, managed long and pet hair with little issue, and removed all the debris along the edge and in the crevices. Furthermore, the dust bin, like all Dyson’s we’ve tested to date, is completely sealed.
Similar to other standard sized Dyson vacuums, it can carry 0.2 gallons of debris in its dust bin, has great maneuverability, and a fantastic build quality. However, due to its age, it lacks some of the newer features we see like auto mode, particulate sensors, and a built-in crevice tool.
The V10 comes with accessories that aid in cleaning situations, including a soft roller brush with the Absolute and Fluffy versions, and adjustable cleaning head with all versions. Additionally, the filter can be washed reducing lifetime maintenance costs.
If you love the Dyson design but would like to save some money, the V10 is an excellent option.

Debris removal wasn’t an issue for any of these cordless vacuums. All of them had removal scores above 96%, which is 6.7% above the testing average. The worst-performing cordless stick on this list, in reference to debris removal, was the Shark Stratos Cordless.
In contrast, the Samsung Jet 75 struggled the most with long hair, having 60.0% of the hair tangle around the brushroll. Additionally, the Samsung Bespoke Jet had minor issues with long hair, though nothing close to the Jet 75.
In all other tests, the stick vacuums we selected were nearly perfect. Pet hair posed no threat, cleaning along edges was a breeze, and even the deepest crevice wasn’t an obstacle.
Sealed System Comparison
For the sealed system test, we want to determine how well the entire vacuum system is sealed. Vacuums that are fully sealed ensure that dust and debris vacuumed stays inside the vacuum. Vacuums that are not fully sealed may spread dust and debris around your home.
To test this, we set up a fog machine and place the tube of the vacuum directly in front of the output nozzle. We then turn the vacuum on and release short bursts of smoke into the vacuum, checking how well the device is sealed.
Vacuum | Dust Bin Seal |
---|---|
Dyson Gen5 Detect | Completely Sealed |
Dyson Gen5 Outsize | Completely Sealed |
Shark Stratos Cordless | Completely Sealed |
Samsung Bespoke Jet | Partially Sealed |
Dyson V12 Detect Slim | Completely Sealed |
Samsung Jet 75 | Partially Sealed |
Dyson V10 | Completely Sealed |
Most of the vacuums on this list are completely sealed, with both of the Samsung stick vacuums being partially sealed. However, they were still sealed well enough to not cause any major issues, in our view.
Run Time Comparison
To test the run time of cordless stick vacuums, we fully charge the battery and run it on a single power mode until the battery is empty. We measure with a stopwatch how long this charge lasts and repeat these tests for each power mode available. We leave the extension wand and standard cleaning head attached for this test.
Vacuum | Power Mode 1 (Lowest) | Power Mode 2 | Power Mode 3 (Highest) |
---|---|---|---|
Dyson Gen5 Detect | 72:19 | 45:47 | 7:26 |
Dyson Gen5 Outsize | 72:22 | 47:00 | 7:15 |

Dyson V10 | 49:40 | 26:50 | 5:30 |
Average Cordless Stick | 55:09 | 33:24 | 9:01 |
Both the Dyson V10 and Samsung Jet 75 have the shortest run times while on their lowest power mode, falling short of the 50 minute mark. On the other side of things, the Shark Stratos Cordless had the longest run time with 78 minutes on a single battery.
As a reminder some of these vacuums, including the Dyson Gen5 Outsize and Samsung Bespoke Jet, come with an additional battery, effectively doubling their run times.
Noise Comparison
To measure how loud a cordless stick is while in operation, we run the device in each power mode on high pile carpet. Using a sound meter, we measure the level of noise generated from about 3’ away.
Vacuum | Ambient Noise | Power Mode 1 (Lowest) | Power Mode 2 | Power Mode 3 (Highest) | Self Empty |
---|---|---|---|---|---|

How We Test
We test and score cordless vacuum cleaners using a battery of 12 data-driven tests. Our tests are a mix of objective testing and subjective assessment. We take into consideration cleaning performance, build quality, system sealing, run time, usability, and maintenance.
To choose the best cordless stick vacuum, we based our selection on the top-performing / highest-scoring cordless stick vacuums according to our objective testing. These tests analyze the device’s performance across these 6 critical factors.
Additionally, price and value were also taken into consideration. While there are a number of other expensive stick vacuums that could have appeared on our list, we wanted to include the best options available for different price ranges.
Our testing process is detailed and rigorous. The links below have detailed write-ups and graphs to explain our testing process, scoring formulas, and the criteria for how we choose the best cordless stick vacuums.
