Summary
The Oransi mod jr. offers a simple design from looks to usage. It is quick to set up and get turned on. With a coverage of 878 sq. ft., the Oransi mod jr. was able to reduce the airborne particles by 94.8% and improve the overall air quality by 98.4%. While there is no app connectivity, the simplistic aesthetic and solid performance are selling points of their own.
Purification Test
To test the Oransi mod jr., we set up the air purifier in a medium sized room in our office. I took a baseline measurement before starting the test to measure the current air quality.
Then, I let the mod jr. run on the highest setting for 1 hour and then measure the air quality to get another set of measurements.
We can then compare the difference between the starting baseline and the post-run data to determine the performance of the mod jr.
Starting Baseline
- PM2.5: 12.6
- PM10: 21.2
- Particles: 1414
- AQI: 52
After 1 Hour
- PM2.5: 0.2
- PM10: 0.2
- Particles: 74
- AQI: 1
Within the 1 hour test, the mod jr. removed 94.8% of air particulates from the medium-sized room we tested in (~14’x10’).
The Oransi mod jr. improved PM2.5 air quality by 98.4%
In order to get these measurements, we used the Temtop LKC-1000S+ professional air quality detector. This device allows us to get precise readings and performance bearings before and after the test.
Below, we’ve included information on the testing criteria and what defines good vs. bad air quality.
The mod jr. achieve good purification scores by reducing the PM2.5 from 12.6 to 0.2 and the PM10 from 21.2 to 0.2. While I would have liked to see the PM2.5 get to a 0.1, this is still great performance from the mod jr.
The Filters
Inside the mod jr. there is a singular filtration unit that utilizes 3 different filtration layers. These layers include:
- Pre-filter
- HEPA filter
- Activated carbon filter
First, the pre-filter catches larger particles like dust or hair before they enter the device.
Following that, the HEPA filter acts as the main part of the filtration unit. It removes smaller particles like pet dander, pollen, and smaller dust particles.
Finally, the carbon filter traps odors, smoke, VOCs, and other smells.
Noise Test
We also tested how loud the air purifier was while running. To run this test we run the air purifier on the three different modes and use a sound meter to measure noise level. We tested the mod jr. from about 3’ away.
Our results showed the following decibel levels from each mode.
Low
19.3 dB
Medium
35.5 dB
Maximum
49.1 dB
There are additional levels of power between these 3 modes. However, the loudest the device will get is 49.1 dB, which is a similar level to the hum of a refrigerator.
Common noise levels:
- 20 dB – rustling leaves
- 30 dB – whisper
- 40 dB – quiet library, babbling brook
- 50 dB – refrigerator, moderate rainfall
- 60 dB – normal conversation, dishwashers
- 70 dB – traffic, showers
- 80 dB – alarm clock, telephone dial tone
Usability Test
The mod jr. is designed to be simple and blend into the décor. Because of that, using the device is incredibly easy. There are just a few things included in the box, but that makes it easy to set up.
Here is what is in the box:
- Mod jr. air purifier
- HEPA filter unit (inside air purifier & wrapped)
- Manual
The power cord comes pre-attached so there is no need to worry about having it accidentally becoming disconnected.
Set up
Because of the simplistic design the mod jr. took seconds to set up. The filter unit comes wrapped in plastic and located inside the air purifier.
Before plugging in the device, you’ll need to remove the plastic from around the filter and replace the filter back into the mod. Once it is inside, you can plug in the mod jr. and turn it on.
The mod jr. is designed to sit on the floor, and the manufacturer recommends setting it up in a place you spend a lot of time. Additionally, Oransi includes a handle on top of the air purifier that makes it easy to use. This handle folds into the device, which helps keep the low-profile look.
Controls
To control the mod jr. you can interact with the touch screen on top of the device.
Via the touch screen, you can:
- Turn on/off the device
- Change the power mode
- Reset the filter replacement icon
Changing the power mode of the mod jr. requires swiping along the power bar on the display. You can swipe to the exact section of the bar you want, getting a more precise power level compared to other units that simple toggle between modes.
While this is an interesting way to change the mode, I sometimes found it to be a little less responsive than I would like. I occasionally was not able to get to the exact level of power I wanted, but it is possible it just takes some time getting used to.
Otherwise there are no other ways to control the device. The Oransi mod jr. doesn’t connect to an app nor is there a remote available for the device.
Additionally, there is no auto mode, which is a little disappointing. Auto mode is nice to have as it would allow the purifier to adjust the fan speed based on the surrounding air quality.
While there is no “sleep mode” on the mod jr. it is designed to be quiet. The lowest mode only creates 19.3 dB of noise.
Furthermore, the display will dim a few seconds after you’ve interacted with it. After the screen has dimmed, it isn’t too bright, and is comfortable to sleep in the same room with.
Maintenance
Taking care of the mod jr. is simple due to the simplistic design. The only item of maintenance required is replacing the HEPA filter. The manufacturer recommends replacing the filter every 6-9 months, however, the exact time can change depending on usage.
The display will indicate the remaining life of the filter and will notify you when it needs to be replaced.
Below is the process to replace the filter:
- Unplug the device and remove the base
- Remove the old filter, and replace with a new one
- Replace the base, and plug in the device
The base of the mod jr. has a locking feature to ensure the base doesn’t accidentally open. When replacing the base, make sure to line up the bottom appropriately so it can re-lock.
