Best Upright for Pet Hair
Pets can be notorious for shedding hair, which can be difficult and time consuming to collect.
Our Pick for the Best Upright for Pet Hair
Dyson Ball Animal 2For the best upright for pet hair, the winner is the Dyson Ball Animal 2. While this vacuum is the bulkiest model of all vacuums listed here, it also has the strongest suction (305 AW), largest dust bin capacity (2.2L) and washable filters… a triple win for cleaning pet hair.Check Price
For the best upright for pet hair, focus on finding a vacuum that has:
- Washable filters
- Large dust bin capacity
- 2-in-1 design
- Tangle-free central brushroll
- Motorized “pet-friendly” attachments
Upright vacuums with washable filters and a large dust bin capacity may make cleaning up pet hair easier.
You can also look for a 2-in-1 design, which is handy for cleaning pet hair from floors as well as upholstery, bedding, furniture, etc.
Best Upright for Carpet
The best upright vacuum for carpet will require greater suction than a vacuum that is only good for hardwood floors, in order to effectively reach the depth of high pile carpet fibers.
Our Pick for the Best Upright for Carpet
Dyson Multi Floor 2For the best upright for carpet, again, we’re going to have to give it to the Dyson Multi Floor. This upright vacuum is just a boss against carpeted floors and effectively cleaned 99% of debris from our carpet tests.Check Price
For the best upright for carpet, focus on finding a vacuum that has:
- Strong suction
- Agitating central brushroll
- Adjustable (or self-adjusting) cleaning head
Suction is important because it allows the vacuum to pull debris from deep within carpet fibers.
In addition to strong suction, a brushroll that effectively agitates carpet is another necessity. Look for spiral bristle brushrolls and the ability to automatically or manually adjust flooring height for the best clean possible.
The Dyson Multi Floor 2 is a good bit because of the self-adjusting cleaning head, which makes it good for carpet of varying types (while also still being a good cleaner on hard surfaces).
Dyson’s Multi Floor 2 upright vacuum scored an impressive 98% overall on our cleaning tests.
Best Cordless Upright
Maneuverability is a key feature when you’re looking for a cordless upright, since it will likely be on-the-go often.
Our Pick for the Best Cordless Upright
Shark Navigator FreestyleFor the best cordless upright, the Shark Navigator Freestyle bags this one. This model is very reasonably priced, has a lightweight body and a good size dust bin. While the run time is short (15-20 mins max), it makes up for it with low price and intuitive features. Check Price
For the best cordless upright, focus on finding a vacuum that has:
- Lightweight body styles
- Long run times
Many times, run time and price are parallel issues. The more expensive models tend to have longer run times while the lower-priced models may only run for 15 minutes or so.

#1. Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2
The Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2 is a full-size upright with a large 1.6 liter dust bin capacity, lifetime washable filter, and 250 AW of suction power.
Best Upright Vacuum Overall
Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2Dyson’s Multi Floor 2 upright vacuum is our top pick for best upright vacuum overall. It scored excellent marks on cleaning performance for all floor types and is designed to be a very well-rounded vacuum cleaner. Check Price
This upright is designed to self-adjust to varying floor types and includes three main accessories:
- Crevice tool
- Dusting brush
- Upholstery tool
Overall, the Dyson Multi Floor 2 upright scored 98% for overall cleaning performance, which breaks down as 95% for hardwoods and 99% for both high and low pile carpet.
It is two pounds lighter than the Dyson Animal 2 upright and offers 40% more suction over the Dyson V10 cordless stick vacuum.
The cleaning test results of the Dyson Multi Floor 2 are shown below:
#2. Dyson Ball Animal 2
For the most powerful Dyson upright on the market currently, you can’t miss the Dyson Animal 2 upright vacuum. It offers the highest level of suction of any Dyson vacuum, maxing out at 305 AW.
Best Upright Vacuum for Pet Hair
Dyson Ball Animal 2The Dyson Ball Animal 2 is excellent for cleaning pet hair thanks to its increased suction, self-adjusting cleaning head, and powered mini-brush attachment. It uses a spiral bristle brushroll, but the low-profile design is a little less prone to tangles than other cleaning heads we’ve seen on the market. Check Price
This vacuum is a little heavier than the Dyson Multi Floor, but it also has a larger dust bin capacity (up to 2.0 liters), washable filters, and is includes a wide variety of attachments.
Designed for maximum performance, the Dyson Animal 2 upright is somewhat of the “Cadillac” of upright vacuums.
If you’re looking for excellent suction, an XL dust bin, and cleaning attachments to suit a variety of jobs, the Dyson ball Animal 2 is a great option to consider.
#3. Shark Rotator Professional
The Shark Rotator Professional is a less expensive upright vacuum compared to the Dysons, but still boasts a number of impressive features.
It has a 9.5″ wide cleaning path, a good size dust bin capacity (1.2 liter), and the ability to quickly convert between an upright or handheld vacuum.
Best Upright Vacuum Under $200
Shark Rotator ProfessionalIf you’re looking for an upright vacuum under $200, the Shark Rotator Pro is a solid option. It comes with a lot of tools, strong suction power, and 2-in-1 design that allows it to switch back and forth between upright and handheld, as needed. Check Price
The Rotator Pro upright vacuum comes with a wide selection of parts and accessories, including:
- Dusting brush
- Crevice tool
- Mattress tool
- Motorized mini-brushroll
- Large floor brushroll
- Hard floor attachment
- Rigid extension wands (for upright use)
- Flexible extension hose (for extended handheld reach)
I would say that this upright is a little less forgiving in terms of maneuverability compared to the Dyson, but again… the difference in price could make that less of an issue.
When we tested the Shark Rotator Pro in our at-home lab, the results were pretty good, more so on hardwood and low carpet. It struggled a bit with high pile carpet.
The cleaning test results of the Shark Rotator Pro are shown below:
As long as you don’t have thick carpets the Shark Rotator is a good pick.
#4. Shark Navigator Lift-Away Pro
The Shark Navigator Lift-Away Pro is somewhat of a “big brother” to the Shark Rotator Pro, offering more advanced features and a larger body style.
Best Upright Vacuum Under $200
Shark Navigator ProfessionalThe Shark Navigator Pro upright is a larger model over the Shark Rotator Pro that comes with greater suction and a larger dust bin. But with the extra size, also comes less maneuverability and a heavier body. Check Price
Overall, its larger body is slightly more difficult to maneuver, but also has an XL dust bin capacity (2.4 liters) and has a lift-away canister for portable handheld use.
The cleaning performance of the Shark Navigator Pro is similar to that of the Shark Rotator. Best performance on low carpet, good performance on hardwoods, and struggled on high carpet.
The cleaning test results of the Shark Navigator Pro are shown below:

If you’re looking for the best cleaning performance from an upright, it’s still hard to beat the Dyson Multi Floor 2 or the Dyson Animal 2, but for a budget option, the Shark lineup is certainly still a solid choice.
#5. Hoover T-Series WindTunnel
The Hoover T-Series WindTunnel upright vacuum is an extremely budget-friendly upright vacuum with a spiral brushroll cleaning head, self-rewinding 25′ power cord, and solid cleaning performance on carpet.
Best Upright Vacuum for Under $100
Hoover T-Series WindTunnelThis vacuum’s most impressive feature is probably the low price, but it does offer good cleaning performance on carpet, a few basic tools, and a large 3 liter dust bin capacity. Check Price
While it does struggle with hardwood floors and is a bit loud to operate, the price is right, which could make it a good option if you don’t want to spend much for an upright vacuum.
So the price is low, the dust bin capacity is high… what are you giving up with the Hoover T-Series vacuum? The main feature it’s missing is cleaning hardwood floors.
The cleaning performance of this upright on hardwoods is pretty sub-par, in my opinion. During our cleaning tests, it had a tendency to fling the debris more that collect it, which basically created a bigger mess.
Despite its struggle on hardwood floors, it was incredibly good on low and high pile carpets (especially considering the price point). As long as you’re not vacuum hard surfaces it’s a good choice.
The cleaning test results of the Hoover Wind Tunnel are shown below:
#6. Bissell CleanView 9595A
The Bissell CleanView 9595A upright vacuum is another nice option if you’re looking for a budget priced upright vacuum.
Best Upright Vacuum for Under $100
Bissell CleanViewThe Bissell CleanView upright vacuum offers basic features, is easy to use and maintain, and has a large dust bin capacity. If you’re in the market for a low priced upright vacuum, the CleanView is a solid option. Check Price
This Bissell upright has a 2.2 liter dust bin capacity and comes with basic tools, including a central floor brushroll, a dusting brush, crevice tool, and extension wand for hard to reach places.
The dust cup is fairly easy to empty and the filter is washable.
While we haven’t run in-home cleaning tests on this model quite yet, we can say that based on its design and tool selection, we would expect the Bissell CleanView to perform decently well on carpet, much like the Hoover T-Series WindTunnel.
Third party reviews do mention it struggling with hard surface flooring like tile and hardwoods, so that may be something to keep in mind if you’re considering this model for cleaning bare floors.
#7. Shark Navigator Freestyle
Last but not least, we wanted to highlight the Shark Navigator Freestyle. This is the only upright vacuum listed in this guide with a cordless design and lightweight body.
It looks like an upright vacuum, but has the portability of a cordless stick vacuum.
Best Cordless Upright Vacuum
Shark Navigator FreestyleThe Shark Navigator Freestyle is a lightweight and cordless version of the larger Shark Navigator Pro. It’s only 7.5 pounds, has an easy-to-empty dust cup, 2 speed modes, and a 15-20 minute run time (on a full charge). Check Price
The battery charges in 4 hours and has a run time around 15-20 minutes, depending on what type of flooring you are cleaning.
There are also 2 speeds on the Shark Freestyle, one for hard surface flooring and one for carpets and area rugs.
If you’re looking for a lightweight cordless that feels like an upright, but without the heavy body or excessive tools, I would recommend checking out the Shark Navigator Freestyle.

Summing It Up
As you can see, despite the gaining popularity of cordless stick vacuums, upright vacuums still have a lot to offer and continue to be a solid option for many households.
I would recommend an upright vacuum if you’re looking for the following:
- XL dust bin capacity – If you need a large dust bin and don’t want the hassle of emptying it regularly, an upright vacuum is a great option. Dust bin capacities for upright vacuums generally ranges from 1-2 liters, which is over twice the capacity of a traditional stick vacuum.
- Strong suction – Suction power could easily be one of the best selling points of a corded upright vacuum. Not having to stay powered within the confines of a rechargeable battery means strong, fade-free suction that cleans as long as you want.
- On-board accessories – Upright vacuums generally include a variety of accessories, many of which are on-board. This can save time and space, allowing you to swap tools in the middle of a cleaning cycle, without having to circle back to a central storage area.
