Performance Tests
At Modern Castle, we use 9 different performance tests to measure its cleaning performance, navigational efficiency, and overall usability.
Our testing series includes:
- Cleaning test
- Mop test
- Hair test
- Pet hair test
- Obstacle avoidance test
- Navigation test
- Cleaning speed test
- Usability test
- Noise test
Cleaning Test
To test the cleaning capabilities of the ECOVACS DEEBOT X1 OMNI, we place 4 different debris types (sugar, kitty litter, rice, and cereal) on 3 different floor types (hardwood, low pile carpet, and high pile carpet).
We then run the vacuum on the maximum suction and measure how much of the debris was removed by weight.
Here are the results:
Overall
96.5%
Hardwood
98.2%
Low Carpet
95.9%
High Carpet
95.3%
Across the board the cleaning performance of the X1 OMNI was excellent. It did miss some debris on each floor type, but not enough to warrant too much concern.
The worst performance was on high pile carpet, where it missed a little bit of everything, but mostly sugar.
Regardless, an overall removal rate of 96.5% is still fantastic for a robot vacuum.
Mop Test
Mopping performance for the ECOVACS DEEBOT X1 OMNI was excellent. It uses dual-spinning mop pads to scrub dirt and debris off the floor.
In our tests, the X1 OMNI did a fantastic job mopping as we noticed a healthy amount of muddy water in the dirty water tank. If you have the mop run daily, you will want to make sure to empty the dirty water tank weekly as it can build up a stinky scent if left for too long.
Please note: the X1 OMNI will avoid carpet and rugs with the mop pads attached. If you need to robot to clean carpet or rugs make sure to remove the mop attachments first.
Long Hair Test
Our long hair test checks how much hair can be removed from the floor, as well as if any hair gets tangled around the brushroll. We place long strands of hair on the floor, run the ECOVACS DEEBOT X1 OMNI over it, and then check the floor and vacuum for hair.
Removed?
100%
Tangled?
Very Good
The DEEBOT X1 OMNI managed the hair well, removing all of the strands from the floor and managing to keep the majority of it from tangling around the brushroll.
While some hairs did tangle, ECOVACS includes a multi-purpose cleaning tool to help remove the hair with ease.
Pet Hair Test
For the pet hair test, we rub pet fur into high pile carpet. We then run the ECOVACS DEEBOT X1 OMNI on the carpet with max suction and see how well it manages the pet hair.
In our tests, the X1 OMNI did great removing a significant majority of the hair. While some strands of hair remained in the carpet, the 5,000 Pa of suction power was able to remove the hair nestled within the carpet fibers.
For deeper cleans, you may want a more powerful upright vacuum.
Obstacle Avoidance Test
Our obstacle avoidance test checks how well the ECOVACS DEEBOT X1 OMNI can navigate around everyday obstacles in its path. The robot utilizes an RGB camera and 3D structured light to identify objects and avoid them.
To test these features, we placed a shoe, a mug, a cord, and some fake pet waste on the floor. We then ran the vacuum in that area and watched to see how well it avoided the obstacles.
Shoe
Yes
Mug
Yes
Cord
Yes
Pet Waste
Yes
Overall, the X1 OMNI did well and avoided all the obstacles we placed in the direct cleaning path. In some cases, especially around the mug and cord, the robot would slightly nudge the object as it was navigating around it.
Ultimately this isn’t a huge issue, however it could be a problem especially around sensitive equipment like a laptop or phone.
However, in most cases, the ECOVACS DEEBOT X1 OMNI should avoid the object and we expect this to only improve with software updates over time.
Navigation Test
To test navigation, we check whether the ECOVACS DEEBOT X1 OMNI can fully navigate our office and studio space without getting stuck and return to the base to empty and charge.
Returned to Base?
Yes
Fully Cleaned?
Yes
Stuck?
No
After running the robot numerous times in our office, we found the X1 OMNI was more than capable of navigating the floor without issue and returning to the base. I never have to worry about whether the vacuum will make it back, as it has successfully navigated every time it cleans.
The X1 OMNI uses LiDAR to map in tandem with the RGB camera and 3D structured light to feed information to its AIVI 3.0 and Truemapping 2.0 software. Clearly the hardware and software work as intended.
Cleaning Speed Test
The cleaning speed for the ECOVACS DEEBOT X1 OMNI was on par with what we see with other robot vacuums.
Cleaning Area
~1,000 sq. ft.
Time
40-50 min.
We had the robot clean our office and studio space of about 1,000 square feet, and it did so in 40-50 minutes.
Usability Test
Usability is where the ECOVACS DEEBOT X1 OMNI really shines. It has many features and tools that make the device more user-friendly. The OMNI station is sleek and has numerous features packed in that enhance the usability. In addition, it comes with tools and accessories that assist with cleaning.
Here’s what comes in the box:
- DEEBOT X1 OMNI robot
- Dual side brushes
- Mopping pad plates (2x)
- Washable mopping pads (4x)
- OMNI station
- Power cord
- Dust bag
- Cleaning brush
- Multi-function cleaning tool
Setup
Setup is simple, however, there are few steps you need to take due to how the product comes out of the box.
- Attach the side brushes
- Attach power cord to base
- Plug in base & charge robot
- Fill clean water tank
- Attach water pads to pad plates (optional)
- Attach pad plates to robot (optional)
This process takes 5-10 minutes for a single person, excluding charging time, which can take up to 6.5 hours, according to ECOVACS.
Controls & YIKO
Physical controls for the ECOVACS DEEBOT X1 OMNI are basic. There is a single touch button on the top that can start / stop a cleaning cycle or send the robot home. Under the cover is a small red switch which can turn the robot on / off.
Built into the robot is a voice assistant named YIKO. This assistant gives you access to more commands than is commonly available with Alexa or Google Assistant. Commands like “Come here and clean.” or “Clean under the couch in the bedroom.” allow you to have more precise control over your robot with your voice.
In testing, we found YIKO to be responsive, most of the time. Occasionally, we would need to repeat our command for the X1 OMNI to hear us and respond.
If you would rather use Alexa or Google Assistant, the DEEBOT X1 OMNI is also compatible with both.
App
For more control of the ECOVACS DEEBOT X1 OMNI you will need to connect to the ECOVACS HOME app.
With the app you get access to a variety of features, including:
- Multimap management
- Custom schedules
- Zones, no-clean/no-mop, invisible walls
- Suction power control
- Mop intensity control
- Cleaning history and reports
- Battery level
- Maintenance indicators
- View through camera
- Speak through device
- Manual control
- Do not disturb mode
- Voice assistant settings
The interface is simple and the 3D maps created by the Truemapping 2.0 technology are a nice addition.
Maintenance
This is where the ECOVACS DEEBOT X1 OMNI truly shines. The OMNI station can handle the majority of daily maintenance for you.
It can:
- Empty the dustbin
- Empty the water tank
- Clean the mop pads
- Heat dry the mop pads
In the station are two 4 liter water tanks that hold clean and dirty water. These will need to be filled and emptied as needed. In addition, you will need to replace the dust bag as that gets full, and occasionally deep clean the robot and station.
Otherwise the ECOVACS DEEBOT X1 OMNI is incredibly hands-off.
Noise Test
Our noise tests measure the level of noise generated by the ECOVACS DEEBOT X1 OMNI as it runs on different settings. We measure the robot from about 3’ away with a sound meter app. Here are the results:
Here are the results:
Power Mode | Decibel Level |
---|---|
Quiet | 33.8 dB |
Standard | 43.9 dB |
Max | 45.4 dB |
Max+ | 46.3 dB |
