Summary

The main reasons to consider the Hathaspace HSP002 is the coverage area, the unique filters, and the simplistic design. It covers a large 1,500 sq. ft. with solid performance, bringing PM2.5 and PM10 down to 0.4 in our tests. In addition, it has the cold catalyst and polypropylene filter for additional filtration. Finally, it is easy to use, set up, and maintain. If you want an air purifier that just works, the HSP002 is a good option.

Purification Performance

To test the purification performance on the Hathaspace HSP002, we place it in a medium sized room (~14’ x ~10’) in our office. Using the Temtop LKC-1000S+ professional air quality detector, we took a baseline measurement of the current air quality.

Hathaspace HSP002
Hathaspace HSP002

Next, we ran the Hathaspace on the maximum fan speed for 1 hour. After 1 hour, we took an additional measurement of the post-test air quality which we can then compare to the baseline.

Starting Baseline

  • PM2.5: 2.1
  • PM10: 3.5
  • Particles: 379
  • AQI: 9

After 1 Hour

  • PM2.5: 0.4
  • PM10: 0.4
  • Particles: 49
  • AQI: 1

In our testing, the Hathasapce HSP002 was able to reduce PM2.5 and PM10 to 0.4. In addition, it reduced airborne particulates down to 49. While this is a good performance, it isn’t perfect. Ideally, we like to see all 4 data points be as close to 0 as possible, especially the PM2.5 and PM10.

On average we see air purifiers able to reduce PM2.5 down to 0.47 and PM10 to 0.70, based on all our air purifiers to date.

The Hathasapce is about average when it comes to PM2.5 reduction, but is marginally better when it comes to larger particles.

Below, we’ve included information on the testing criteria and what defines good vs. bad air quality.

The Filters

The Hathaspace HSP002 uses a 5 part filtration system to purify the surrounding air.

These include:

  • Pre-filter
  • Polypropylene
  • HEPA
  • Activated carbon
  • Cold Catalyst

The pre-filter is washable, and catches larger particulates floating in the air, like hair or dust.

Acting as an additional pre-filter, the polypropylene filter will help remove smaller particles floating in the air before they reach the HEPA filter. Polypropylene isn’t often included in air purifiers, however, in 2021 the CDC reported polypropylene would enhance the filtering effectiveness of face masks.

Next, the HEPA filter captures particles as small as 0.1 microns like allergens or pollen.

Following the HEPA filter are the carbon filter and the cold catalyst filter. Carbon filters help by capturing VOC’s and removing odors in the air.

Also removing VOC’s is the cold catalyst filter, which focuses on formaldehyde, benzene, and other harmful gasses. It then transforms them into something less harmful.

Wind Speed Test

For the wind speed test, we place an anemometer directly where the air ventalates from the HSP002. We then measure the minimum and maximum fan speed.

Minimum Wind Speed

3.3 mph

Maximum Wind Speed

15.2 mph

Ozone Test

Additionally, we test to see if the Hathaspace HSP002 creates any ozone while running.

To perform this tests, we take pre-test measurements using an electronic ozone meter. We let the air purifier run for 1 hour, take post-test measurements, and then compare the results.

Pre-test Ozone

0 ppm

Post-test Ozone

0 ppm

Air purifiers that have an ionizer running can create small amounts of ozone. Since the Hathaspace does not include a negative ion generator we expected no ozone to be generated.

As predicted, the Hathaspace HSP002 created no ozone during our tests.

Noise Test

For the noise test, we use a sound meter from about 3’ away to measure decibel levels generated by the Hathaspace HSP002. We start by measuring the ambient noise levels of the room without the air purifier running.

Next, we turn on the Hathaspace, run it on the minimum and maximum fan speed, and

Here are the results:

Ambient

40.3 dB

Minimum

40.7 dB

Maximum

55.2 dB

Our tests showed the Hathaspace HSP002 has a noise range of 40.7 – 55.2 dB. On the lowest fan speed 35.6 dB is plenty quiet for sleeping at night.

Common noise levels:

  • 20 dB – rustling leaves
  • 30 dB – whisper
  • 40 dB – quiet library, babbling brook
  • 50 dB – refrigerator, moderate rainfall
  • 60 dB – normal conversation, dishwashers
  • 70 dB – traffic, showers
  • 80 dB – alarm clock, telephone dial tone

Usability Tests

Usability for the Hathapsace HSP002 is good. It lacks any form of wireless control, but still has useful features and is easy to use.

Setup

Out of the box setup is incredibly simple thanks to no included accessories and lack of app connectivity. The Hathaspace comes as one pre-built unit with the filters pre-installed.

Make sure to remove the packaging surrounding the filters before plugging the device in and turning it on.

Controls & App

Controls on the HSP002 are excellent. Via a touch screen display on top, you can access all the features programmed into the air purifier. These include:

  • Fan speed control
  • Max fan speed
  • 1 – 12 hour timers
  • Auto mode
  • Sleep mode
  • Toggle lights
  • Current air quality
  • Filter life indicator

The touch buttons are easy to interact with and the display is clear to read. An auto mode is always a fantastic addition, allowing the air purifier to automatically adjust fan speed as surrounding air quality changes.

As mentioned previously, there is no app connectivity or included remote with the HSP002

Maintenance

Maintenance is similar to other air purifiers. The pre-filter will need to be washed periodically and the sensors wiped clean.

As the filter comes as a singular unit you will need to replace the whole filter at once. Hathaspace recommends it be replaced every 3,000 hours or 4 months for optimal performance.

Size & Dimensions

The Hathaspace HSP002 is a larger air purifier, but not the largest we’ve seen. Its size makes it fairly heavy, but the inclusion of indents to act as handles helps make that process easier.

Here are the exact dimensions of the Hathaspace HSP002:

  • Length – 9.45″
  • Width – 16.54”
  • Height – 27.17”
  • Weight – 26 lbs.

It can cover up to 1,500 sq. ft. with a CADR of 264.9 CFM for larger particles and 94.2 CFM for Formaldehyde. This should be more than sufficient for any large room, and even whole  apartments / homes.

Should you buy the Hathaspace HSP002?

I would recommend the Hathaspace HSP002 if you’re looking for the following features:

  • Specialized filters: While the Hathaspace HSP002 has all the filters we commonly see in a HEPA air purifier, it also adds the polypropylene and cold catalyst filters. These help filter the air in different ways than you would otherwise see with a HEPA or carbon filter.
  • Large room coverage: With a coverage area of 1,500 sq. ft. the HSP002 can cover any large room or even whole homes / apartments. Additionally, it has a CADR 264.9 CFM for larger particles, which should provide plenty of air changes per hour for most rooms.
  • Simplistic usability: The Hathaspace is easy to use and that is because of the simplistic design. Setup is practically complete out of the box, and the intuitive touch screen control & display are easy to interact with. They make maintenance easy, only needed to replace one filter at a time, and being able to wash the pre-filter as needed.
