This type of setup may limit exactly where you can install this type of unit so be sure to think about the factors of install prior to purchasing this air conditioner.
The Controls
At the top of the AC unit is a digital display that has touch screen controls as well as a current temperature readout.
The gray buttons change the settings and modes and a blue LED illuminates those changes in the icons above.

- Or you can adjust the fan speed: Low, Medium, or High
The up and down arrows in the middle of the control panel are used to:

The temperature can be displayed in Celcius or Fahrenheit. Additional controls are available on the remote control.
To use the remote, you don’t need wifi or any complicated setup. Just plug in the unit and you’re ready to go.

Size & Dimensions
The Black + Decker is a medium-sized unit that is designed to sit on the floor next to an adjacent window.
The exact dimensions are listed below:
- 16.5″ wide
- 11.5″ deep
- 26″ tall
- 52.9 pounds
Accessories & Parts
The Black + Decker air conditioner includes everything you need for setup and install. The exact contents is listed as:
What’s in the box?
- Black + Decker unit
- Remote control
- Exhaust Hose
- Window Kit
- User manual
The “window kit” includes everything you’ll need for a secure, draft-free install. For proper install, you’ll need to route the exhaust hose out an exterior window and seal the edges with the included foam tape.
This helps to bring in a constant stream of fresh air, without allowing additional hot air to leak into the space.
What’s NOT included?
One part to take note of that is NOT included is a rain cover or grate cover for the fan exhaust. We were surprised to find this not included.
Without a proper cover, inclement weather or even small animals may enter the home via the exhaust hose.
While this may not be a deal-breaker for every consumer, it’s definitely something to think about.
Black + Decker Performance
To evaluate the performance of this portable Black and Decker unit, we ran it through a series of tests to how well it was able to cool this area.
All of these tests took place under the following conditions:
- Location: Phoenix, Arizona
- Building: Frame construction, foam roof, fiberglass insulation, stucco exterior, built 2007, renovated 2020, 950 square feet.
- Room: Testing room is a ~10’ x 14’, vaulted ceilings
With the performance test, we were looking at the following factors:
- 4-hour span within the same day
- Internal & External temperature
- Internal & External humidity
- AC Unit running constantly, attempting to achieve a temperature of 72° F
With all of those factors in mind, here is how the Black & Decker performed:
- Date: September 1, 2020
- Time: 4 hours (9:20 am to 1:20 pm)
- 0 Hour – 81.7° F, 39% humidity (inside) | 89° F, 43% humidity (outside)
- 1 Hour – 77.9° F, 45% humidity (inside) | 92°F, 34% humidity (outside)
- 2 Hour – 77.0° F, 45% humidity (inside) | 94°F, 32% humidity (outside)
- 3 Hour – 76.1° F, 46% humidity (inside) | 96°F, 30% humidity (outside)
- 4 Hour – 75.6° F, 46% humidity (inside) | 100°F, 26% humidity (outside)
The Takeaway
Overall, the performance of the Black & Decker portable AC unit was good. Starting with an inside air temperature of 81.7°, this unit was able to cool it down to 75.6°.
Considering the outside temperature was 100°at that point in time, I would say this performance was solid.
DID YOU KNOW? The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language identifies room temperature as around 20–22 °C (68–72 °F).
Humidity Concerns
Aside from the temperature performance, I also want to make a note about the humidity, as the Black + Decker prides itself on being a 3-in-1 air conditioner, fan, and dehumidifier.
In our tests, we did not notice any dehumidification going on with this unit. At the beginning of our test, the humidity was around 39% and at the end of the test (4 hours later), it was 46%—an increase of 7%.
NOTE: We did not extensively test for humidity control beyond the cooling tests as this review is intended to only review the air conditioning capability.
Setup & Usability
Setup of the Black and Decker air conditioner was a bit lengthier. The instructions were easy to understand, but you’ll want to give yourself at least 30 minutes for proper install.
The instructions walk you through the details, but basically it comes down to the following steps:
- Unbox the air conditioner and properly dispose of all packaging.
- Attach the exhaust hose to the unit and route the house out of an exterior window.
- Use the foam tape provided to seal any gaps between the window and the unit.
- Plug it in and turn it on.
- Use the remote control or digital controls on top of the unit to adjust the settings until the room is comfortable.
How easy is install?
Install is not hard, but it does take time to do it correctly. It may take longer if you are unfamiliar with the parts and tools.
I would say most people could unbox and install this unit within about 30 minutes.
The foam sealing tape is a nice addition since it does help to better insulate the window.
If you plan on using this unit for an extended period of time I would encourage you to take the time and do a great install.
The better the install, the less cool air you will lose out the open window, making the unit more efficient and effective.
Black & Decker Maintenance
So let’s talk about maintenance.
Proper maintenance for this Black and Decker really doesn’t take much effort—less than 5 minutes all the way around and minimal maintenance costs, if any at all.
Here are the three parts to monitor.
- The Filter: It comes with a washable air filter that can be cleaned with soap and water, which helps to limit replacement costs.
- The Vent: Remember to wipe down the vent on the top of the unit with a dry, lint-free cloth. (Microfiber works great.)
- The Exhaust Hose: The exhaust hose has no grill plate or cover so it’s important to check that hose for debris, small animals, or any other thing that could get in the way and hinder performance.
Is the Black + Decker worth it?
Overall, I was happy with the value of the Black and Decker. For the price, it has good area coverage, a nice set of features, remote control, and good performance during our tests.
For most consumers the Black & Decker portable AC is worth it.
If you are specifically looking for a unit that doesn’t tap into an exterior window, that could be a disadvantage to this unit. But that being said, the seal seemed secure and it was fairly straightforward to install.

Should You Buy the Black + Decker?
I would recommend the Black & Decker air conditioner if you’re looking for the following:
- Window exhaust, but not window mounted: The unit sits on the floor with an exhaust hose to the window. This is a nice benefit compared to a traditional window mounted unit, as it’s easier to take down in the off season.
- Portable Design: This unit is 52.9 pounds and while heavy, is still lighter than some other models we’ve tested. The wheels on the base make it easy to roll from room to room, or for storage in the off season.
- 3-in-1: Having the ability to run this unit as an air conditioner, fan, or dehumidifier is a pretty nice feature. This reduces the need for additional devices around your home.
